Yesterday was the second time in a month that my wife and I were going for a walk down Claiborne Parkway and were crossing in the crosswalk across Wynridge when a car with a red light on Claiborne failed to stop all the way and nearly hit us in the crosswalk. We had the green walk sign to cross Wynridge at the time. People are continually failing to make complete stops on red lights and looking for pedestrian traffic before taking a right turn on Wynridge towards Mooreview. This bad driver behavior happens at all intersections of Clairborne and Ridgeway/Wynridge. We know that traffic on Clairborne has picked up since it opened up to cross Crosen. Many of our neighbors with young children have said this has happened to them multiple times as well. We've continued to report these Aggressive/Reckless inattentive drivers to LoCo Sheriff both by email or the non-emergency line of 703-777-1021. Sadly we've all seen that change only occurs after something bad happens. Please report these types of incidents to LoCo Sheriffs.

We don't know if VDOT could help, but maybe if enough Broadlands residents continue report these "near miss" car/pedestrian accidents, together we can make change before something life-changing happens. If it's happened to you, please contact LoCo Sheriffs and report the events.

Loudoun police aren’t very proactive- they are more of reactionary meaning you only see them when there is an accident- in my 11 yrs of living here, I’ve seen them maybe 2-3 times. I don’t know what they do with their time, really.

Since I’ve lived here, I’ve seen many accidents, near misses, people who never signal, people who never turn on their headlights during raining weather or even at night, I’ve seen people go through red lights, fail to stop at stop signs, aggressive driving and so much more.

I’ve lost faith in the police in making our roads safe yet Chapman keeps getting re-elected and our roads aren’t any safer 11 yrs later-

I doubt we have enough cops here like FFX County does and they do more enforcement than Loudoun does-

I doubt Loudoun cops will do anything different.

Like I said- I view them as being a reactionary force and nothing more. That’s wha our taxes got us.

I saw LoCo hiding in the dark along evergreen last night down by Gumsprings. And I see them plenty on the move as I traverse here to Rt50 area. I think they are out there plenty... the problem is the miserable drivers and zero fear of retribution.

I want a dash cam just to capture the insanity I see everytime I'm out. My saying is I can't make a single trip anymore without seeing at least 2 stupid driver moves every trip.

I totally agree with all of these comments. I do however think that for some reason, the intersections in Loudoun County are complicated. Around here, at one time, it seemed like every other four-lane divided parkway/boulevard/parkway had four-way stop signs. Then, traffic lights were added. Take for example the intersection of Ridgeway/Claiborne/Wynridge. As one travels south, at speed (45-50 mph), there are very large trees that obscure the upcoming traffic light. Then, there is increased traffic since Claiborne connects all the way down to Loudoun County Parkway to take travelers to South Riding and Rt. 50. Also, there are lots of pedestrians that cross both Claiborne, and Wynridge/Ridgeway. It's really dangerous.

To be sure, drivers are certainly to blame for unsafe practices at intersections. But VDOT also bears significant blame in almost every intersection accident. One may say Loudoun County intersections are "complicated." I prefer to say they are poorly designed and programmed. Take the Claiborne/Ridgeway/Wynridge intersection: If you are traveling east on Ridgeway, your light does not turn green until about 3 seconds AFTER the light for someone driving west on Wynridge. Therefore, if the lead driver on Wynridge wants to make a left turn to head south on Claiborne, he thinks the driver on Ridgeway isn't paying attention and guns it to make a left before the driver on Ridgeway starts moving. I've seen this happen at least a half dozen times, resulting in near-miss head-on collisions. Even worse, on two occasions there were pedestrians with strollers in the crosswalk that came withing inches of being mowed down.

Good ol' VDOT. They know best, right?

Road engineering has little to do with road safety. Just as improved auto technology keeps us safer, it doesn't help the other cars on the road if bad driver behavior doesn't change.

That's dangerous driving. Maybe you can blame Virginia for not finding a way to revoke the driver's license. Blaming VDOT for this intersection is a little much.

Not sure if anyone else saw but this morning around 730-740am there was un-marked LCSO SUV pulled up on the lawn. He had his window down as we walked past him and said he was there in response to a previous report. He pulled someone over shortly after we walked. Glad to see they are out there in response to original post. Interestingly when we walked back home he wasn’t there and of course someone headed north on Clairborne rolled right through a red light and turned right towards Mooreview when we had the green walk sign to cross.
