Post Edited. I'm deeply appreciative of the parental response in this incident and we're all happy to put this behind us. Thanks.

Unbelievable...and I thought we had it bad when a bunch of teenagers threw our patio furniture through our windows as well as my neighbors windows.

Jeez, I'm guessing that's when you quit handing out candy as well? Don't get me wrong. I was no angel as a teenager and committed my fair share of petty crime in the midwest 30 years ago, but I never physically threatened people nor considered how I might be able to ruin their lives by inciting them to put their hands on me for youtube money and fame. It's a serious and sinister approach with life impacting possibilities and running at a theater near you.

They actually threw your patio furniture through the windows? That’s pretty criminal to me and I hope they got caught and prosecuted.

Have you considered getting a no trespass order?

What did the cops do? Just shoo him away?

I noticed that there are quite a bunch of high school kids that are not wearing costume but just want to get as much candy they can which is just ridiculous. I think they could do other things with their time instead of harassing / terrorizing families. I dread Halloween sometimes because some of the kids can become aggressive and I’ve had some kids try to grab my bowl only to have me order them to let go and I’ve told them to leave my property because I felt they were trying to cause problems with me. In this day and age with a growing number of kids trying to make money with YouTube, I’m becoming more wary of trick or treating and I’ve seen kids try to vandalize (if they don’t get candy) others properties such as cars, yard equipment and the like.....this just shouldn’t be “swept under the rug” by others saying “oh kids will be kids”. Keep in mind, what goes around comes around meaning if one’s kids do it to others ( without their parent’s knowledge)—some other kids may do it to you. Karma? Maybe so. My point is, parents should not be so quick to say, my kids never do anything like that because they are not there to see their kid(s) cause issues!

I hope that kid leaves you alone going forward....secondly, that kid is lucky he didn’t get shot because in some places, some people or even a cop who own guns may not be so understanding when someone has “something” in their hands especially in the dark threatening others on their own properties. Cops have more leeway since they may be protecting their families and themselves. I worry that some stupid kid will get themselves shot in the dark...and some parent is going to lose their loved ones over something stupid.

I don’t blame people for not wanting to participate in Halloween traditions because some kids take it too far and hurt others. Parents— talk to your kids so that you won’t have to deal with the sheriffs coming to your house letting you know that your kid(s) are causing problems on other people’s properties....this could mean the difference between life or death if someone is protecting their families from physical harm. (Remember, some kids’ actions such as running up the driveway can be construed as potentially violent especially when the kid may be holding something in his hand that the other person cannot see clearly. It’s a tragic accident waiting to happen. You cannot blame the property owner if the kid is the aggressor with an unknown object in his hands, especially in the dark. I do know of more than several neighbors who do own handguns with a concealed weapon permits....so TALK TO YOUR KIDS!!!!

Petty larceny and criminal mischief are nothing new for Halloween. I am so sorry that someone deliberately damaged your property and harassed you like this for trying to bring something enjoyable to society.

I think there are a couple things going on. 1) Does Halloween, as we currently celebrate the tradition bring about the best in society-- can we do better? 2) Should unsupervised candy begging (what we call Trick-or-Treating) be replaced with a local ordinance curfew/law for no one unsupervised without an accompanying adult older than 18/21?

While it certainly is cute to see that little one dressed up in a princess costume, or dinosaur, or dragon, and take them around for a couple blocks, while you carry hot tea, coffee, cider, or other beverage around and meet people, as the kids grow older, does this still serve a useful purpose? Is candy begging and loading up on candy and sugar really healthy?

I am all for having the conversation about changing the Halloween tradition. After a certain age, sending a pack of older kids around unsupervised will lead to some trouble. Not everyone will get caught up in it, but many will.

The vast majority of the trick or treaters are well behaved and having a good time. I have zero problems with high schoolers coming to my house as long as they as respectful and have at least an attempt at a costume. Those teenagers who are not behaving - the ones who are threatening, stealing bowls of candy, damaging homes - they are definitely the exception. Most in our neighborhood are respectful and are good kids.

My daughter who is in middle school went out with a group last night and I had the opportunity to watch for a bit before she realized I was there when I drove over to get her before the storm. I'm thankful that she had the opportunity to go out with her friends. When we were kids, we were able to do things like this all of the time without our parents. Our kids don't get that chance often anymore because Halloween is one of the few times you can be out in the neighborhood with other people around. Usually, the streets are close to empty - even on a gorgeous day.

I did see that group of teenage boys last night on Chickacoan. They had their shirts off, were yelling obscenities and were blocking traffic in road intentionally. That's not the norm in our community and I'm glad that the original poster called the police.

This morning, my co-worker, who also lives in Broadlands, showed me a video from his Ring Doorbell showing one OLDER (high school aged) kid SWIPING the ENTIRE bowl of candy and putting it all into her pillowcase.

This just fuels the discontent among families not want to buy any more candy and participate in Halloween because --what's the point of Halloween trick-treating when ONE kid swipes all the candy away from everyone else? We pay $$ to buy the candy only to have it all taken away by one kid. Its just demoralizing and takes the fun out of Halloween for the younger kids when there isn't any more candy left to give to them.

It just dawned on my co-worker that some kids may be doing this to get more candy into their pillowcase for one of 3 reasons:

    1) For bragging rights to having the MOST candy among his/her friends and/or siblings;

    2) To take the entire contents to the dentist to get cash in exchange for the candy (Some dentists have advertised cash in exchange for candy- My high school friend who is a dentist mentioned to me a few years ago that he no longer gives out $$ in this manner after realizing the same kids were coming back with bigger and bigger pots of candy...he isn't dumb to realize the kids just want the $$$)

    3) They have an addiction to candy themselves and want more than what their parents can buy for them alone.

I've decided that I'd rather donate the $$ to charity instead where it can go a long way to good use than to spend it on candy only to have it all swiped by one greedy kid leaving nothing for the others.

Some of the residents don't have the time to sit outside or to open the door constantly to give out candy because either they are having dinner with their families or are trying to put their young ones to bed early.

Its just sad that the above posted incidents are increasing in frequency over the years- *SOME* kids are getting more bolder doing stupid things that are ruining the experience for both the homeowners and little kids. Its becoming more of an annoyance and less fun over time.

I *totally* understand Rhaegar's feelings and frustration there because I have been there myself several times dealing with unruly kids on halloween over the years. I, too, lament the times where when we were kids, we were able to do things all the time without parents hovering around--like jdhauer said. Those days are fast disappearing-

My coworker said to me..."Its the parents of the kids that are doing a "p**s poor" job of parenting the kids. We are seeing the product of their parenting skills. There is no respect for others anymore".

    Sad but true.

Based on the edited post from the OP, it appears the parents were part of the resolution. Was that the case or was the Sheriffs ofc part of the resolution?

It seems like unless there are actual consequences as a result, this will continue to happen. Where does behavior like this come from? Is it just mob mentality with a teen showing off? To me, there is more here than 1-off prank antics. Should the neighborhood be concerned about this teen(s)?

Everyone wants to be a viral video star...

Why does someone lick ice cream in a grocery store? So they can film it...

yes. very true. I guess part of my rhetorical question was coming from frustration. Common decency, love thy neighbor and simple human decency, is really all I was hoping for. Just partly amazed (saddened) that these kids would take things as far as they did.

After reading some of these posts it is with no great surprise that I come across a makeshift bong this morning while walking my dog on the nature trail connected to Tithables.

What lovely children we are raising here.

Someone told me the other day that some of the kids’ parents aren’t very involved in their kids lives as they work long hours, etc and poor supervision Among other reasons...so it doesn’t surprise me if the kids aren’t raised well...I guess you could point your fingers at the source...the parents.

Casting kind of a wide net there. You have no idea how any of "these" families are dealing with THEIR lives. How about you raise yours and let others raise theirs. ;-)

Bet you can’t deal with reality these days.... just sayin’. Someone is raising these kids and these kids are causing problems with other families that are not their own...and you have the audacity to say let them raise their kids? Well, I can say it’s all our problem when it comes down to the kids terrorizing another family as the original poster put it before yanking the post. Secondly, when kids go around to other people’s homes damaging others property on Halloween (or another time), some of us aren’t going to sit quietly and excuse the kids’s parents for their kids behavior. I’m sure if someone’s kids either damaged your property or terrorized your family, you’ll excuse the behavior and put up with it. I think NOT. SMDH. I wonder why some of the kids are acting out these days more and more...for cripes sake, there was another school shooting by a student in California today..... I can’t help but wonder if parenting has someth8ng to do with it? Or is it a “cry” for help by them? I’d like to see if a child psychologist can chime in with their thought but I doubt anyone will....

If you want to brush these incidents aside and say mind your own business, that’s you but when it begins to affect other families other than the kid’s own, Ill say what I think whether you like it or not. I rarely ever listen to the “thought” police by the way.
