Is there any local program to recycle Smoke detectors? I just replaced my 20 year old Kidde with Nest Protects and I hate to throw them in the trash.

Ashburn Fire didn't have any programs going. Supposedly you can mail them to the manufacturer as well but if they ask you to pay shipping I don't know if it's worth it.

I haven't heard about any recycling programs from smoke alarms. However, the US Fire Administration says to replace smoke alarms every 10 years or if the alarm does not sound when tested. According to Consumer Reports, the life expectancy of smoke alarms is generally 10 years, after which point their sensors can begin to lose sensitivity. The test button only confirms that the battery, electronics, and alert system are working; it doesn’t mean that the smoke sensor is working.

Thanks I'll check that out. I think Best Buy may take them as well if they reopen.

I know you can just throw them away but it's a shame to toss this into a landfill where it will never decompose.

For anyone interested - Kidde recycles smoke alarms but you have to box and ship them back.
