I know our one original goodman ac unit is in need of coolant as it's had a slow leak since the beginning. Seems every 4 years or so I need to put in a pound or so of coolant and it's been 4 years. I've been calling around and some places are just not answering. I got one web quote for a non emergency call but it was out to mid august for appointments and around $200 a pound for coolant and $85 for a half hour visit. Seems a bit steep.

Anyone found a good company around here with decent prices on coolant for those older units?

That old R22 freon is getting hard to come by. $200 a lb. is not a bad price.

I had one company rep say $150 was what she thought was the price but the tech would have the official price and to not quote her on it. I'll keep calling around. Still having trouble finding anyone to come out within the month for a non-emergency call. Would like to get it checked before the really bad heat hits. Thanks for the reference signifer.

Does Climatic still offer it? They are usually very responsive. Good luck.

Climatic for the win. I had them out last year to recharge during the very hot days of july....$180/lb plus the service call cost me almost $500--but it was quick and they were awesome. The price is going up every year. I had a leak in my system...so it was down again this year, and it was time to replace the whole unit. They came out quickly, got me on the schedule to replace the unit---and recharged the unit another couple of pounds to get me by until the replacement was done without any charge to me. It's service like that that will keep me coming back.

If you are still on a Goodman unit and it's over 10 years old, you are on borrowed time. I got 15 years out of ours but when they went, they went together. good luck.

What price did they charge you per pound?

We've already replaced one of ours. The larger one has been hanging on for about 12 years. Started having to put coolant in every 4 then. Hoping it can last a bit longer

Be very aware of the terms they provide for warranty on the replacement. I'd read that section a few times over.

I ended up having Modern Mechanical come out and do a unit check up and service. I've used them off and on over the years and they have always been good. Some interesting things came out of the service call. I didn't tell the tech anything and just had him do the diagnostics.

Over the years I've been told
    1. The new carrier unit that was installed by a popular company on here was running at 80% efficiency due to a manufacturer issue after 2 or 3 years. I was told that the part would be covered under warranty but it would cost me over $1000 to bring the unit back up to 100% efficiency as labor was not covered. Modern Mechanical found no such issue with the unit.
    2. I've been told that my goodman unit has a slow leak. It's been 3 years since coolant was put in and I was expecting coolant to be needed. Apparently there is no leak anymore as the pressures were all in spec. The tech was surprised when I mentioned I've been told the unit is leaking.

With that said they did find that the bearings are going in the blowers. That's to be expected I guess in an almost 20 year old house. The fan on the goodman unit is off balance causing the motor to draw some high amps. Should be fine for a while though. I think I found a replacement fan online for about $80 bucks. Doesn't look hard to do myself.

All in all it was worth the $118 to have them look over it all. Glad I didn't have to put any coolant in the goodman unit.
