Flooring (Wood Floors)

I am looking at having wood floors put in kitchen/family room as well on second floor -

Looking for a company to do this....but Im getting a sticker shock-

Looking for recommendations here on the wood installers.

They quoted me for 1,300 square feet -- $20K!!! Reasonable?

Also my main floor and the stairs are all "real" wood - not engineered wood.

Would it be ok to have upstairs flooring to be engineered wood or should I have the entire upstairs be real wood as well?

Thoughts, lessons, and recommendations are all appreciated here.

Cap - we recently had about the same amount of sq ft done and used a high end laminate. It looks like real wood but is significantly cheaper.
We used Floor and Design (703) 726-9699. Their showroom is in Ashbrook Commons (same as HomeGoods). They moved from the location on Google maps, closer to the Harris Teeter now. Ask for Fred.

That quote is a little over $15.00 per sq ft. You may want to check the cost of the flooring you want to install and see what they are charging for labor. The going rate for labor should be about the same cost of the materials. Accordingly, is the flooring you want $7.50 Sq Ft for flooring material? My son in law and I pulled up the carpet in my family room and office and installed 3” wide by ¾” thick hardwood that matched the rest of the first floor for substantially less than $7.50 sq ft (cost of the flooring materials) even after adding in the cost of purchasing a flooring nailer and quarter round trim. Granted, my job was only about 600 sq ft compared to your 1300 sq ft. We were not experienced flooring mechanics and it took us two full days to complete all of the prep work, installation and subsequent installation of quarter round.

Regarding your question about having real wood on one floor and engineered wood on the 2nd floor, I personally would not see that as an issue.
