    Flag Etiquette
Please remember that US flags, no matter where they came from, should always be treated respectfully, never allowing them to touch the ground and be properly disposed of if they become unserviceable. If you need to retire a flag, please contact the HOA office at info@broadlandshoa.com or 703-729-9704 to arrange a drop off at the Nature Center in the American Legion Post bin located in the lobby. For more details on proper flag etiquette, please visit usflag.org/flagetiquette

    Following up on this:

I am wondering if the HOA has standards or regulations on how the US flags are displayed in the HOA community? I am noticing that people are hanging up their US flags however they feel like it. I thought the HOA had regulations? No?

If there are no rules/regulations, we can hang our US flags anywhere on our property such as on trees? Garage doors? Balcony? Windows? Just asking as Im wondering what the protocol is within our community. Does it really matter?

Yeah and no one at the HOA is enforcing it....We have residents here that are hanging flag from a tree (!!!) and also draping a flag over the garage door (not on a pole to the side of the garage door!).... I don't think its a priority to the HOA anymore.

People aren't going to follow the HOA regulations when it comes to flags. I recall someone telling me that they would tell authorities to "keep their hands" off of their US flags, including the HOA. So I suspect the HOA is keeping their distance with that in mind due to the sensitivity of the political climate today.

I just was surprised someone would hang the flag ON tree branches....I thought that was kind of disrespectful. But again, this is "Merica we are talking about.

There is nothing in the guidelines that state a flag must be on a pole. Hanging from a tree on draped on a house may not be everyone's cup of tea, but a home owner is allowed.

After reading it more carefully, you are probably correct. Guess perhaps its time to revisit the guidelines as the way the flag is being displayed in an unorthodox way can have detrimental effect on another neighbor if they are trying to sell their house. Not sure if a potential buyer would want to live next to a house that throws a flag on a tree branch hanging over the front lawn. A friend of mine who is a realtor remarked that it "can" make it harder for her to sell a house if a house next door is unkempt, has oddities in the yard, or has things outside the house that detracts from the normal decor around it.

Guess that means I can hang my flag over the balcony then! :)

I believe the house right next door (or maybe two down, don’t remember) to the one you are referencing with the flag hanging from the tree just sold. I guess the buyers didn’t mind the flag on their new neighbor’s tree.

Not every buyer would like it. Some don't care and some do. Meh. But now since the I have read the HOA's standards, I guess anything goes since its only pertaining to flagpoles only. So flags in windows, balcony, trees, over decks, etc are permittable, I guess.
