In the last week I have seen two large dead birds in the road and neither appeared to have been hit by a car. The first one looked like one of the vultures and it was on Broadlands Blvd and the second on was a Coopers Hawk on Claibourne (between Wynridge and Ryan). Hopefully they aren't being poisoned.

If they were outside and not wearing masks it’s probably Covid-19. They should be swabbed and tested.

    CJA,

I realize you didn't post this a a joke, but are you suggesting fowl play? Don't mean to ruffle any feathers.....

Weeks ago, I had a very young and ill one near my yard but I didn't realize how sick it was until I found it dead the next morning. I called a wildlife sanctuary and they asked me to bring him in for testing. The radio-graph was clean but the blood test revealed poison. Yet again this morning, I found another juvenile hiding under my deck. We startled each other. He is not flying away - similar to the first one. We'll see if there is a pattern...

This is so sad. What kind of birds are you seeing? I wonder if someone is trying to poison the vultures and is killing other birds... just awful...

For the ones I saw one was a turkey vulture and the other was a Coopers Hawk. Someone moved the hawk off the road but that was a few days ago so it is probably gone by now.

Possible or could be something like lead poisoning. Neither of the birds had been hit by a car.

KTdid - what part of the neighborhood do you live? I want to keep an eye out for similar events. With so many rabbits in our yard this year, the hawk has been able to grow fat and happy. Our deck is a favorite spot for over watch.

Illegal Shooting of Hawk on Clairborne Parkway/Via Veneto Way. These 3 hawks were all shot on 12/12 and had to be humanely euthanized. Shooting raptors (and any native bird without a legal hunting season) is a crime. The largest of the hawks, the Red-tail Hawk was found at the intersection of Clairborne Parkway and Via Veneto Way in Ashburn. If you know of someone committing such crimes, that information should be reported to our state wildlife agency at WildCrime@DWR.virginia.gov and USFWS at FWS_tips@fws.gov. In addition, the Loudoun Sheriff's department is investigating. If you know anything about the Red-tailed Hawk's shooting, please contact the Sheriff's department or the Blue Ridge Wildlife Center.

12/12 was the day I saw the hawk on the road on Clairborne (between Wynridge and Ryan). A guy in a white truck stopped and picked it up and took it up off the side of the road.I drove away after that. If someone is shooting them I hope they get caught.

There's another sick vulture laying on a neighbors roof. It is still alive. I hope it is not another poison issue or we will lose our raptors to more than the recent shootings.

Maybe see if the wildlife’s services people can come get it and they should be able to see if it was poisoned. You are right if it was the others birds or what ever eats it may get sick as well.

As I was heading out the door around 0845, there were a group of vultures gathered around it. It was gone when I got home around noon. I have no idea if it was sick or injured. I went over to the neighbor's yard to see if it may have fallen off the roof but didn't see any sign of it. Very odd.
