I am quite surprised what I've learned from the Loudoun Sherriff's Department today as it concerns trucks parking next to stop signs blocking people from seeing the stop signs in residential areas.

I had noticed that for some time construction box trucks had been blocking our residential stop signs from view in the vicinity of my neighbors. The Sherriff's department said that it wasn't illegal for them to park NEXT to the stop sign blocking other's views of the stop sign which can potentially result in accidents if people don't stop before going on on the road. They said that the Sherriff can decide whether to enforce the law or not in spite of the prohibitions below......

    10.25.050 General parking prohibitions.
    (1) No person shall park a vehicle, except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or in compliance with the directions of a police officer or traffic-control device, in any of the following places:

    (a) On a sidewalk.

    (b) In front of a driveway.

    (c) Within an intersection.

    (d) Within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection.

    (e) Within 30 feet upon the approach to any flashing beacon, stop sign, or traffic-control signal located at the side of a roadway.

    (f) Between a safety zone and the adjacent curb or within 30 feet of points on the curb immediately opposite the ends of a safety zone, unless a different length is indicated by official signs or markings.

    (g) Within 50 feet of the nearest rail or a railroad grade crossing.

    (h) On the side of a street opposite the entrance to any fire station, within 75 feet of such entrance, when properly posted.

    (i) Alongside or opposite any street excavation or obstruction, when such parking would obstruct traffic.

    (j) On the roadway side of any vehicle parked at the edge or curb of a street.

    (k) Upon any bridge or other elevated structure upon a street or within a tunnel.

    (l) In any area or space on public or private property open for parking to the public designated and marked as a “fire lane.”

    (m) At any place where official signs prohibit parking.

    (n) In any parking space marked “Reserved Parking” unless the vehicle so parked is entitled to reserved parking in that particular space.

    (o) At any place that obstructs access to a city water meter.

If this happened in Fairfax County, they would definitely be getting a ticket so I guess the Sherriffs here have a more "laissez faire" attitude about our own traffic regulations here. Its either that or they think its too much trouble for them to write out a ticket. If an accident happens, usually its the truck owner/driver's fault but if they can prove that the Sherriff's Department failed to enforce the rules, the county can be held liable in an accident, if one happens.

I'm just stunned that parking next to and blocking stop signs are considered to be legal per Sherriff....they are ignoring their own traffic laws here. What gives?

Post edit.....I spoke with a friend of mine that is a Va State Trooper and he said that Loudoun County Sherriffs are not respected very much by the Va State Troopers as they think that the Sherriffs are a joke since they don't really do much enforcement in the county. (I think that is why last year there was a debate whether to have the County Sherriffs be replaced with County Police instead.)

Thats clearly speculation and subjective as well as one troopers opinion of our sherriff deputies. So, that carries no weight.

You are also speculating as to why the debate regarding the replacement of our sherriff department. If you honestly believe what you wrote verses the reason being political, you are incredibly naïve.

Seems to me you have a position you are trying to get traction on regarding our Sherriff department. Care to share? I noticed you didn't post on the thread discussing it-https://www.broadlandshoa.org/hoaforum/index.php?threads/vote-to-create-countywide-police-department.36894/

I don’t support paying taxes for an ineffective Sherriff’s department — I don’t give a hoot whether you think a Va Trooper’s opinion carries any weight or not.

    ‘Nuf said.

Have a nice evening. I’ve said my piece here and not going to respond further. I don’t care to continue to debate ad-nauseum with you. If you want to respond, that’s fine because I won’t be coming back on here in this particular thread to read it so your response will go nowhere.....
