    Greetings

Maybe I missed the notice but bulk pickups are now charged for broadlands residents. As of January of this year, Patriot disposal no longer is contracted to pick up anything placed at the curb that does not fit into the trash bin. A deck chair will cost $50 to pick up, for example. I was not aware of this change and even had items picked up as recently as last month I had items picked up when I left them curbside.

not surprising because cost of business is going up and businesses are looking for ways to make more money to cover their rising labor costs….

Can someone from the HOA post here what the Patriot contract is required to pick up. There was a similar thread on this last year and the contract was out for bid. It seems odd that everything must fit in the toter.

I had 2 small items leaned up against the bin any didn't take them. They don't get out of the truck even though there are two people in the truck. I happened to be outside and they had me put them in the bin once it was empty and they used the arm to dump it again. They said they don't take anything unless it is in the bin I guess because they use the arm to pick them up. Don't lean anything up against the pail or you chance it getting knocked over by the arm and then it will lay in the road all day. I was also quoted $50 to take a deck chair. I took it apart and put it in the bin instead.

I, too, am interested as I didn’t see any communication in the mail or on Broadlands HOA website. When did they change their policy? Was it communicated to the board by Patriot? In the beginning they were picking up items that were outside the bins but mid-way through contract, it seems they are making changes with no warning to all of us?

    Just wondering that’s all….

    Thanks!

I just went into Patriot’s website and beginning TODAY (NOV 1), they now are mandating 3% convenience fee on all credit card charges …meaning if you want to pay $50 for them to pick up a large item, they will charge you an additional $1.50 for using your CC. I don’t think there is another way of paying for it without being hit with a convenience fee of some sort.

Since January 1, 2022, the contract stated that bulk items would be collected at an additional charge, but that previously had not been enforced by the contractor. See the website for details on pickup.

Patriot changing their bulk item pickup policy, to the communities detriment, years into our many contract years with them is garbage. The HOA should talk to them about returning to their previous high level of service or make arrangements to find another company to do business with in the years ahead.

The HOA did look last year. Other companies offered the same or lesser services at a higher price.

So we prefer to stay with Patriot and Patriot clearly does not wish to lose our large neighborhood contract. Maybe a discussion with them about returning to their former practices would be a win for both parties and keep this issue from escalating further. It cannot cost Patriot a lot of money to occasionally pick up bulk items from our HOA members, whereas losing our future business will cost them big time…

The bigger issue is how much they charge. $50 for a deck chair is ridiculous.

They define bulk items as small furniture, mattresses, bed frames, appliances, etc. I would not consider a deck chair as bulk. It sounds like they are saying it must fit in the toter. I would like to know if that is in the contract.

I suggest you contact the HOA to fill you in on
    The discussions/negotiations.

I can live with them not doing extras for us but I don't feel so good if they can't live up to agreed upon requirements from the contract.

We're they really giving us extras and freebies all these years?

Btw, I have had a busted recycle toter for three years. I called and they said they were backed up replacing these. Are replacements covered by the contract?

Also, a suggestion for bulk items... The Loudoun dump? Charge by the pound? Maybe I fill up the SUV and drop off a whole load and it is more economical than paying Patriot. I will price this out.

I did call Loudoun Recycling /landfill - They said it’s 7 bucks for loads under 200 lbs but if it’s simple stuff- it’s a flat 7 bucks a vehicle. Check their website- extra work and gotta drive there- I’d rather save thr $ instead of giving it to Patriot for 50 bucks a pop- if I let them do it - they may complain that 200 lbs is too much and try to charge me more - Go figure- They’ve cut back their services for some time and they are calling it cutting back thr free services??? Sorry, but I don’t buy that excuse when they’ve been doing that ever since I moved in in 2009. I think they are trying to cut it loose because they are seeing labor costs going up and trying to find $$$ to pay thr increased labor costs- That’s my take on it- I could be off base but what do I know but I do know my company is dealing with increased labor costs which is why more employees are leaving for more $ elsewhere these days! Inflation ya know?

I think it's worth mentioning the obvious - they always picked up bulk items in the past before they transitioned to using the side loader. Isn't this why they are trying to enforce if it fits it gets pitched? It takes additional resources to pick up bulk items.

It doesn't affect me since i make a dump trip monthly to drop off cardboard and glass.

No, all bottles and jars. I try to avoid buying anything in plastic. Once glass is broken and contaminates the cardboard, it all gets trashed so it's pointless to separate it from the trash if it ends up there anyway. IMO.

    5 Things
First - cost me $75 for a mattress and chair to be picked up.
Second - How much is Patriot saving by going to side loader trucks as they will only need one employee per truck.
Third - Perhaps that's why they changed bulk pickup. Only one man per truck needed.
Four - Doesn't seem they are passing any of that savings on to customer. More like they are capitalizing on top of their labor cost savings.
Five - Might be cheaper for HOA to purchase our own truck to do bulk pickup.
