I believe they went out last week. Note, this is not from the HOA, it's from the County Dept of Transportation.

If you have LOST or HAVE NOT RECEIVED your Speed Hump Ballot you may request your voter ID (used to login and vote) by sending an email to: dept-tci-rtm-ballot@loudoun.gov

You must include your full name and address when requesting your ID.

I filled out the LCSO traffic complaint form to see what type of response I get to traffic calming. I will report back.

Since they are focusing only on two specific areas on Ridgeway drive near Mill Run Elementary and NOT on the rest of Ridgeway nor Stone Hollow Road- I’m not tendering my vote as a disapproval of how the entire study was done. Last night a tow truck was speeding along the section of Ridgeway before going up the hill - he was going at a pretty fast clip that I thought was as rather dangerous in my view at least.
I have, in the past, called LCSO and they did come out to “observe” but left after only 10 mins. What a joke that was. I’ve never called them again because I believe they aren’t serious about busting speeders. I did ask a LCSO officer why they don’t stay very long and was told that they don’t have enough officers and are needed elsewhere instead.

I recall seeing LCSO cars parked near intersection near Harris Teeter albeit unstaffed. They refuse to use unmarked cars and have someone inside to catch traffic violators- why? I dunno- I do know that Fairfax County Police is more effective than our Sherriff’s are. I believe it has to do with political affiliation here. Chief wants as many votes he can get so he’ll focus on areas that have higher “crime” than traffic laws. Further, most Chiefs of Sherriff’s will staff their organization with people with similar political views as they do as they have the luxury of doing so so as to help them win at election time.

I seriously believe it’s time for the county to switch to a POLICE Dept instead of having an elected Sherriff. He should be answerable to the COUNTY - not to voters. If a Sherriff’s Department tickets people way too much, people will VOTE him OUT! That’s a good enough reason (for me) to do away with Sherriffs since the county isn’t able to direct the police department.

I don’t expect everyone to agree with me and I don’t care if they do or don’t. I’ll just end it here saying I think the LCSO traffic enforcement around here is a joke and I have reason to believe that it is going to continue that was until Sherriff either changes his focus or someone else takes over his job after next election. I think we need more traffic enforcement since the county has WAY more people driving around here now than 10-15 yrs ago. I hardly see any sheriffs patrolling around Broadlands-

If you think a Police Chief that would answer to POLITICIANS is better than one that answers to people would be better and less political, then I disagree.
Just look at what the mayor of Baltimore did when the city was being looted and ransacked.

It looks like Broadlands traffic calming has the attention of our District Supervisor, who is a politician. I think Supervisor Glass is doing what she can to help by writing letters in the Broadlands Newsletter and staying engaged.

How do we get the attention of Sheriff Chapman? How do we become more empowered to help take care of our own neighborhood if LCSO does not have the force to actively patrol?

Maybe we need to ask Sheriff Chapman to come meet with us in a Town Hall?

perhaps we create a neighborhood watch? we could get flashlights, radar detectors, spike strips and matching jackets. I doubt any cars will be able to speed if they have popped tires.

Are you kidding me? Spike strips? You surely are being facetious, aren’t you? I wouldn’t even recommend that!

Bottom line is that LCSO doesn’t have enough manpower to really dedicate their time to traffic enforcement in Broadlands- I rarely leave Loudoun and hardly ever see any sheriffs patrolling in Broadlands-

Loudoun is far different than Baltimore-

If the people aren’t happy with the Sherriff, there is NOTHING we can do because he is ELECTED and there is no ONE person or organization that he is truly accountable to. We would have to WAIT until his term is up to elect someone else.
The Loudoun county government will be able to hold the police chief accountable and can fire him/her if they are unhappy with the performance.

I believe Chapman isn’t doing enough regarding traffic enforcement and I’ve reached out to him only to be blown off when I voiced my concerns-

I just don’t think we are going to get anything done traffic enforcement-wise despite the traffic study. I’m just very disappointed in how the study was conducted but what is a few of our concerns really going to do? It’s most likely not going to make any impact or changes. The study is going to benefit residents on a SPECIFIC part of the road- not other areas that are just as problematic as others. Calling LCSO repeatedly isn’t going to resolve thr issues because they just don’t have the manpower to deal with it. They may come and observe for 5-10 mins then leave. Hardly a solution there.

Why is everyone getting so worked up about speeders and what the LCSO is not doing regarding enforcement. Have you driven on any of the roads around here? No one is pulling anyone over anymore. Just look at the toll road in the morning speed limit 55 and most including are doing 70+ including me. 495 is just as bad in the morning. We have Broadlands residents blowing thru stop signs all the time as they treat them as a yield at best. Forget about right hand turn on red after a full stop, most people don't slow down. NIMBY for speeders. I love how the LCSO has to put an electronic sign telling people to lock their doors and remove valuables. My neighbors care was "broken into" and when asking questions he admitted he left the door unlocked. Well too bad you should have locked it. LCSO has a lot more to worry about then speeders in our neighborhood.

As promised I am reporting back after filling out an online traffic complaint with LCSO.

Bottom line, the best chance to stop or calm traffic problems is to catch in the moment.

Since that is very difficult, it is not likely this will calm the issues I reported.

Speed humps will slow the cars in front of a few houses on flat surfaces, which is definitely not a community solution.

I drove past the traffic calming sign on ridgeway at speed today, the sign said I was traveling 0 mph. Same sign blocks the view of the roadway at the T intersection with Stone Hollow. Pretty unimpressive government effort at problem solving.

I got my ballot. It was a postcard and easily missed if you weren't looking for it.

So far, none of the 4 areas is even close to being approved. In fact, there hasn’t been a single area that has had 50% participation.
In all four areas there are more “yes” votes than “no”.
At this point I don’t see any of them happening.

people like speeding too much. It's kinda like asking congress to approve term limits for themselves. Not going to happen

    I agree with you-

I’m in eyeshot of the speed indicator on my street and I’ve seen people be tracked as little as 9 miles all thr way up to 45 MPH.

I think the study was a complete waste of money as we all KNEW speeding was a problem (we didn’t need a study to tell us that!)

Nothing will be done and thr problem continues unabated.

    end of story-

Broadlands AREA 4 Officially Passed this evening!!

I am very glad there are some in our community who care enough to vote for this safety measure even though it didnt fit perfectly into what their ideal scenario would be. There are some who decided to "take their ball and go home" because it didnt meet everyone one of their needs instead of step up and help meet the needs of the community as a whole. Is it a perfect solution? Certainly not. But it should at least help. And thats better than nothing while we work within the parameters that we are given.

Thank you to all who voted - even if the approved speed humps arent exactly where you would like them, I have no doubt that this will make our community safer.
