Your last comment was actually civil and on point, so I appreciate that. I have no issue with the one set of speed humps which were approved by the majority of residents being installed but no more without a vote after the requisite time period required by law has elapsed. I look forward to hearing if your neighbors approve or disapprove of these speed humps after living with the daily reality of them for a few years. I think we can agree we live in a great, mostly safe and friendly neighborhood. Have a good evening.

I swore "last comment" but in light of your last post, need to make one more.

Passions run high when we are dealing with the safety of our community members. I apologize to you personally if I offended in anyway - that was not my point. Obviously, the opinion on how we deal with community issues will vary greatly depending on who you ask. I couldn't agree more that we live in a mostly safe and friendly neighborhood. I think it is true that more speed humps cannot be installed without waiting 5 years for another study, then another round of voting etc.. So this is it for a long time - which makes passions run higher. Are speed bumps/humps a royal pain in the @$$? Absolutely. But I think those who voted in favor hope the benefits outweigh the inconveniences.

I too appreciate your civility. We are all neighbors after all and we all strive for the same thing. A safe community to live in. I hope you have a good evening as well.

I hear the humps are in place on Ridgeway.
    Any thoughts or comments?

The speed limit is 25 mph when school is not in session but the new speed bumps will damage your vehicle if you go over them at 25 mph. What a mess…

I saw the signs go up but didn't yet notice the road changes. If they are indeed installed I hope it slows people down on that flat section of road near the 10-12 homes who will benefit from the slower traffic.

But since this thread is about traffic calming I would like to point out that Claiborne Parkway still sounds like a dragstrip. I did see in one of the newsletter meeting summaries that Management was directed to reach out to LCSO to enforce more speed compliance. Yet the racing and revving continue. I have been trying to relax at the pool the past several weekends and sometimes wonder if I am at a drag strip.

Agree, and I'll add Waxpool to the mix and just speeding in general (even with the school flashing lights.)

Speed bumps are there but not very obvious as they aren’t painted and there was no signs announcing their presence. Only thing is our tax dollars only benefited 10-12 homes near the schools and did not really benefit the rest of the homes in Ridgeway- people STILL speed down the hill towards past Stone Hollow Road towards Laurier Drive where they’ll take a left turn there to get onto Belmont Ridge Road through the neighborhood there. Yes, I agree with some people that Claiborne is still a speedway just like many other roads such as Belmont Ridge and Loudoun County Parkway- we have very little traffic enforcement in this area- LCSO aren’t really keen on that part of policing. Inwas talking to some young kids who are learning how to drive and many say they feel intimidated by many of the speeders because they are afraid of getting hit by them and want to get out of their way.

I’ve heard the police aren’t doing anything about it because the problem is so pervasive and one deputy even said they’ve given up because there are just too many speeders and not enough resources to go after them. They go on to say they have higher priorities than speeders- they only will deal with those that have accidents as a result of speeding (reactive force instead of a proactive one).

Thus, speeding is here to stay is their hidden message.

Why is it a ‘mess’ as you put it? Don’t want speed bumps?

So, I just learned about this traffic calming effort. I often bike down Demott Dr from Welby Ter and eventually get on the new shared use paths near Demott & Silver to go to the Metro station or the Harris Teeter shopping center. It's normally comfortable since I typically see maybe 1-2 cars max (0 most of the time actually) on a given ride. The worst I experience is a car being behind me and me feeling like I'm inconveniencing the driver, but not the end of the world.

Alexandria recently implemented advisory bike lanes, which seems to work really well for a lot of low-medium trafficked residential roads with street parking. Cars take the center travel lane and yield as needed. These lanes are also a traffic calming measure because the travel lane is narrower and drivers have to drive more cautiously. The preferred motor vehicle volume (ADT) for 25MPH seems to be 3k max. From OP's study, it looks like the most Demott Dr sees is 677. I would probably design these to switch back to normal shortly before the traffic lights on Waxpool and Broadlands Blvd.

As a cyclist, it would be nice since I won't be holding up any drivers. In my opinion, these fulfil a similar purpose as speed humps/bumps while also being cheaper, allowing snow plowing, etc.

Probably too late, but just a shower thought. ‍

My issue is why does a traffic safety issue get put up for a vote? I know the speed humps on Glebe View between Turo Parrish and Broadlands Blvd got voted down. Speeding on Glebe View is out of control. The traffic study clocked three people going in excess of 70 mph on Glebe View. Just crossing Glebe View feels like a live version of Frogger at times. Something needs to be done and it shouldn’t be up for a vote. I guess someone needs to be hit by a car before anything is done.
