What can be done about flyers in doors

Does anyone have any idea if there is a way to stop marketers from walking on our property and sliding their annoying flyers through our door cracks? :(

Isn't this why we have the boxes under our mailboxes? I consider people coming to my front door an invasion of privacy. Additionally, the rubber insulation between the door and the door jam is not mean to have papers shoved through them. It's also annoying since very few people use the front door given that we all have garage door openers. We, therefore, have to take the time and clean up the garbage that the marketers leave behind for us.

If you have any suggestions, please do post them. Otherwise, perhaps it's just a nuisance that I have to live with.

    Thanks! :)

Probably the quickest way to make an impact is through the power of the open market. Call the number of the business who left the flyer and let them know that you do not appreciate their marketing tactics, that you will most definitely NOT use their service and that you will advise others not to.

If the business sees a negative impact from their efforts, they will stop. However, it is an inexpensive advertising vehicle...and despite the nuisance, they probably generate enough response/sales to outweigh any negative impact from people such as you who will NEVER use their business anyway.

I also usually point out, especially for those that stick notices on the door on Friday, that they are advertising my house as vacant, and I will sue them as an accomplice should my house be robbed.

I've tried this already. A couple weeks later they were back at it.

What we need to do is collect all of their flyers in a big bin somewhere. Then when we find out who's in charge of each operation, we can show up at his/her place and jam all their flyers in their door. Maybe throw in some of our own flyers. And leave some on the front lawn, too, just like they do to us in Broadlands.

Or we can give their phone numbers to advertisers. See how they like getting flooded with phone calls, too.

These are great ideas. Perhaps, as more of us call the advertiser, they will decide to not walk up to our front door with these flyers. However, for every call that we make, there are 5 more business that come into the area. Perhaps a "No Solication" sign?

We have one and it doesn't work. I've thought of writing it several different languages and adding it to my door, but I still don't think that will work with these people. I've even thought about sending them a bill for the repair work in getting the sealent fixed, since there silly ads pull the sealant away from the frame, making my home not as efficient.

Good luck - maybe it's just me but when I've called one business in particular, the receptionist on the other end said "Yeah" and obviously wasn't interested. I then asked to speak to the manager and was cursed at in both English and in Spanish. Not a good way to entice people to want to use your maid service.

If it helps, it was a maid service and the company goes by many different names on the fliers - the phone number is always the same.

I've been told in the past that unless the community as a whole enacts a No Solicitation act, these companies have every legal right to trespass on our property and damage our houses.

When I brought this up a long time ago I was told that girlscouts would be in violation if they sold cookies, so it'll never pass.

Actually, if you're talking about limiting acces to private property, you can shoose who you let solicit. So, schools and scouts allowed, commercial (business) not allowed, others get permission from HOA. No problem. Governments and such have more difficulty with shades of gray. Private enterprises are not as limited. (The whole Target no Salvation Army was a crock)

Adding to the problem with marketers, VanMetre stuffed a flier in my front door, through the weatherstripping a day or two ago concerning upcoming construction on Glebe View and inspecting our home to check for current condition before they start blasting across the street.

That definitely could have been MAILED to us instead of being shoved into the door, possibly causing damage to the house.

I intend to take this up with VanMetre.

I don't know if the HOA would allow signage but if a no tresspassing sign were posted you could have the person charged with tresspassing and the owners charged with conspiring.

§ 18.2-23. Conspiring to trespass or commit larceny.

    A. If any person shall conspire, confederate or combine with another or others in the Commonwealth to go upon or remain upon the lands, buildings or premises of another, or any part, portion or area thereof, having knowledge that any of them have been forbidden, either orally or in writing, to do so by the owner, lessee, custodian or other person lawfully in charge thereof, or having knowledge that any of them have been forbidden to do so by a sign or signs posted on such lands, buildings, premises or part, portion or area thereof at a place or places where it or they may reasonably be seen, he shall be deemed guilty of a Class 3 misdemeanor.

There are guidelines for signage on page 49.
