We have a very high tech community featuring wideband access for all. :D As such, shouldn't we have a set of expectations for our vendors in this regard? Shouldn't they have a requirement to at least have a website....let along electronic payments online?

Our HOA account management company Armstrong Management Services, Inc. is the case in point. No website, no available electronic services except for a blank email address to an accountant is available.

I for one would like to make writing checks and sending bills via postal mail a thing of the past. When can we make this change? How is this done?

actually, that's just y'all down south[:p] We up here in the nawth have lower HOA fees so we can send some to adelphia for cable internet.[xx(]

BTW, I use my bank to send on-line payments for all my bills. Ok, so they cut checks for the luddites and mail them, but at least I don't have to.

All you have to do is call Armstrong Mgmt and ask them to set up an automatic deduction from your bank account. They will send you the paperwork, it is really pretty straightforward. You will get 2 direct debits/withdrawals per month -- one for the regular HOA fees and another for the SW HOA fees (Openband).

Have you considered an on-line checking account? It serves the same purpose. Besides, think about it. Would you rather log onto 15 different web sites to pay 15 electronic bills or log onto one to pay all from one location??

While I agree that there are other ways to skin this ugly cat, shouldn't the vendors we select be more compatible with our community?

they lack a service they want..

    pretty simple in my book.

Yes there are alternatives, but they don't offer direct pay online. A very common service.

They offer direct debit .. which is much easier to use than trying to remember to go online to enter a payment.

We use Quicken, and have it setup as a recurring online payment.

Within a few months, the homeowners will have the capability to view their accounts online and see their payment history. More on that in future newsletters.

Actually Neil, what would be nice (and what I *think* Steve was insinuating) was that the option to pay the HOA fee online directly to the management company is not available. Imagine the scenario that I realize that It's the 6th of the month, and 11:30pm and I totally forgot to send in my payment. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to just go to an Armstrong Management website, and make a payment securely online which won't have to wait 6-10 days to be credited? I for one would love such an option, just as an 'insurance blanket' in case I forget to schedule a payment online with my bank, etc. (Yes, I know I can schedule recurring payments in the future, but this is simply an example...)

I understand, however, until Armstrong Management offers such an option, we do recommend that direct debit, or other online method be used.

FWIW ... our contract with Armstrong is very reasonable compared to the cost of doing this inhouse, or another firm.

Yes, the point is things you listed are are ALTERNATIVE methods to the one people have asked for. My only beef was every time this comes up, people get snuffed as if their request or this method is a bad way of doing things. Its just another way.

Not everyone uses quicken or the like.. nor do all banks offer free bill pay.. nor do most people like setting up automatic recurring payments.

Offering direct pay on the website is quite common for most services.. even if you can pay via your bank, etc.

The automatic withdrawal thing I don't think anyone likes.. having it done automatically from YOUR side is much more flexible and leaves you in control vs the old 'send us a canceled check' method where they set you up for recurring withdrawals.

Again, I agree ... and I'm not trying to 'snuff' anyone, however, until Armstrong Mgt offers such a service, the alternatives are all we can recommend.

Neil, we're not saying "Let's drop Armstrong because they don't offer these services!" What we're saying is can someone propose to them that they should look into some of these services, as they would be very convinient to many homeowners in our area. That's all. We're not trying to knock them down...
