If my neighbor leaves his sprinkler on ALL DAY and it runs off into my yard making it swampland, can I go turn it off? Or is that trespassing? Clearly he's forgotten about it.

I think I would just go re-position it so that it would more evenly water my yard. [IMG]

Quit being a pansy and go talk to him or reposition it.

Did it ever occur to you that maybe he wasn't home and I couldn't talk to him?

And before I just repositioned it to suit my own needs, I wanted to get feedback as to whether this was the *right* thing to do.

I would just turn it off and leave a note.

The sprayed water in your yard is a trespass (technically). Any physical invasion is a trespass be it a ball, bullet, water or other matter.

FWIW .. if I had forgotten my sprinkler on, and a neighbor shut it off, I'd appreciate it, as it would save water, and save on my water bill.

That said, I would shut the water off, and leave a note tied to the hose bibb.

It depends too on what kind of relationship you have with your neighbor. Hopefully it is a good one and he/she will not be upset if you turn it off or even talk to them about it.

I wonder what people would think if someone came into their fenced back yard in the middle of the night & unscrewed an outside lightbulb?

I'm just curious if there are people that consider this acceptable?

Apples and oranges. One is during the day, water all over the place, into neighbor's yard.

Other is middle of the night, all bets are off. I'd call the sheriff's office myself.

I think that its fairly obvious this is a joke, not something threatening another person.

For someone who uses the handle of "einstein" you sure are NOT!

It is apparantly obvious he was joking. Oh, go ahead and forward it. I am sure the Sheriff's office would love you wasting their time. Heck, they might even get a laugh out of it.

Haha...It's a joke, get a sense of humor. I'm sure the sherrif's office will drop all the stabbings and car theft in Sterling to investigate a post about a bb gun in an internet forum.

As to the question "is it the right thing to do?"

I think that any neighborly, friendly kind act is always the thing to do. It is a shame that we have to think twice about being nice.

I also think the intent of the trespass (to help someone out versus to steal their lawn chair) makes all th difference.
