    Hi all,

Just moved to a house that has an inground sprinkler system installed by Allen Sprinklers. I got a call from Allen Sprinklers informing me of a service they provided that will flush out the water from the sprinkler system before winter and turn the system back on come next spring - as well as other maintenance checks. This service will cost me $150 and they said that if I do nothing, chances are the sprinkler pipes will freeze (?) and I will be looking at costly repairs.

Can I just turn off the exterior hose bib before the winter months and turn them back on next year? Any feedback would be appreciated.

You should definatly winterize the system. If you pay someone to do it, or do it yourself I don't want to comment on. The key is to know all the components, and know where the correct valves are, etc.

You can find tips on the net about winterizing systems, but heres an example discussing using compressed air to blow it dry.

I'm not sure about Allen Sprinklers, but we have Bio Turf. We pay the fee for them to turn to winterize and turn them off. It's basically a service contract. Our contract also includes all maintenance - including replacing the heads. This summmer our main switch (not sure what it's really called!) needed to replace. Having the service contract with them more than paid for what that alone would have cost. I would definitely recommend the service contract - especially if it's an older system.

    Just another warning.

If you are building a new sprinkler system, do NOT use Allen Sprinkler and Nightlighting. They messed our system up big time, and according to the inspector they are known for making the same "mistakes" again and again ... and hoping not to get caught. We forced them back in June to fix the mistake, and somehow they broke the sprinkler system while doing that and didn't tell us about it. I was wondering why my yard got more and more dry ... finally I tested the system. They had busted a pipe and turned it off alltogether, and left it like that.

Unbelievably bad company, and get very nasty when you demand they fix what is not done properly, such as sprinkler heads in the VDOT right of way.

    Sigh.

We used Biogreen. At this point I'd be hard-pressed to recommend them. There have been a few issues (slow reponse, I don't seem to get full coverage) that, while rectified, I don't hink should have occurred. I use them for my lawn service also (fertilizer only) and I'm pretty satisfied there. My schedule seems a little late, but they've blamed that on the summer heat and/or lack of rain (although, with a sprinkler system, I don't think the lack of rain should have affected me in this area). Biogreen is OK but . . .

We just had a sprinkler system installed by Affordable Sprinkler and Lighting - the cost to winterize it is only $95.00

From what the owner of the company (Ryan Munaz, 703-815-7500) indicated it is pretty important to have a company flush out all the lines (to flush out any water left in the lines) as well as turning off the main water line both inside and outside.

    Hope this helps.
