Being relatively new to Ashburn, I haven't noticed any public mailboxes (besides at the post offices). Am I just missing them or are they just not here in Ashburn?? Any insight to this would be appreciated.

Most SFH in the area are built with a rural mailbox installed, with the flip up flag that denotes outgoing mail to the carrier. Thus public mailboxes are not as necessary as in many cities.

That said, I'd like to see some of the big blue boxes placed in the shopping centers for those who do live in townhouses and need to put stuff in the mail.

Our townhomes have an outgoing mailbox right where our mailboxes are.. the mail carrier picks up when they drop off mail

Also, the Postal Connections by Safeway and the Mailbox Plus (?) by the Ashburn Farm Giant will let you drop off mail for pickup.

When I lived in a townhouse I just put my outgoing mail in my mail box and the carrier picked it up when delivering my mail.

It's not exactly close, but there is (or used to be, anyway) a public mailbox outside the CVS in the Food Lion shopping center at Farmwell Road & Ashburn Village Blvd.

I've never had luck with that. They never take what I leave.

Our townhouse mailboxes have 2 outgoing mail slots in them and I've never had any issues with mail not getting delivered.

There is a box on Crossroads Dr. off of Ashburn Farm Prkwy, next to the United Methodist Church that you can drive up to (but it's on the passenger side). I drop off my mail there if I miss our pickup. That's the only one I've found outside of the Post Office, but I was wondering if there were any others around.

I know about those, but for those (SFH or townhome) who may miss the carrier pickup, having something available they can drop in the box for late or early morning pickup would be nice.

Thanks everyone for all your input. I guess most of you have found the same thing I have. I have lived in Reston and Vienna and other places all over the country and this is the FIRST place I have ever lived that doesn't have the Public Blue mailboxes scattered around :( Does anyone know if there is a restriction on these type of boxes being put in place?

There are mailboxes around. There is one on the street across from the gas station in the shoppers food warehouse center at the intersection of framwell and ashburn road. also check the US postal site which gives the locations and hours of all their postal blue boxes and stations.

Basically, its up to the Post Office to decide where to put the boxes.

I have talked to the Ashburn postmaster about this.
They won't put up new boxes any more. The few that are there are pre 9/11 and
more importantly before the anthrax mailings. They prefer to pick up mail from
residential boxes and force mailers of packages to come to the post office or a
    postal mailing center.

Getting rid of boxes somehow protects us from unabombers and anthrax nuts..
This is unfortunate and doesn't really do anything to stop those who would mail
something dangerous but at least it sounds like we are doing something IMO.

There are still thousands of boxes all over the country. There were everywhere
in Fairfax when we lived there. Another knee jerk reaction as far as I am concerned.
