I have what I think is sciatica which one doctor a while back said my scholosis was causing the sciatica. I have blue cross blue shield and will not need to get a referral but I want to go to a good doctor that can deal with both a bone and nerve issue. I always feel like lately my back is going to spasm. I also want a good massage thereapist that can help and knows this condition. The one I go to at the spa works a spot that feels like I stuck my finger into an electrical socket - I have never been to a chiropractor before, and am hesitant to try that route until I see a good back doctor first. I wonder if this would be an orthopod?

Hberg, I come from a long line of lower back pain inheritors, and have suffered sciatica. My dad, who had horrible pain from his back over the years, swore by his osteopath, who he simply went to on his own in addition to his regular physicians.

The benefit to a Doctor of Osteopathy is that they are a GP AND trained in the same muscular/skeletal/neural disciplines as a chiropractor. The fact that they are also a medical doctor means they can prescribe.

That is where I have gone whenever I've had the family trouble, and I haven't had to go in years. My major treatment (when dad first referred me, because one morning I had to literally roll out of bed and crawl to the bathroom) consisted of some manipulation, some muscle relaxants, and a program of exercises. I use the exercises whenever I get the twinges, and for some years now they have been effective.

Check out an osteopath, because like my dad, I now swear by them! Good luck, and I hope your back gets better.

    Barbara Munsey, from South Riding.

Dr. Ditaranto at the Ashburn Medical Center here in Broadlands (in the lime green monster on the corner of Ckickacoan and Truro Parish) is a DO. (703-729-1660)

I've had good results working with Capitol Rehab in the Gold's Gym over by the new Harris Teeter on Route 7. They have a couple chiropractors, a couple physical therapists, and a good massge therapist on staff so they have all bases covered. (703-726-9866)

Capital Rehab is awesome! They did wonders for my back. They not only do chiropractic but teach you the exercises to help strengthen your muscles to keep it all in place. There massage therapists is wonderful as well! They are incredible.
