So, Apple finally caved into peer pressure and introduced an iPod that plays videos. It's not really designed to be the video iPod, but it probably sets the stage for a future device that is a true portable video player.

I'm curious to hear what others think about watching TV shows (eg Lost, Desp. Housewives) and music videos on a 2.5" screen.

On the one hand, I think it'd be nice for those long plane rides. On the other hand, it's a teeny-tiny screen, and typically I'd have my laptop with me anyway.

I'm a huge Apple guy, so I love pretty much anything they do. But, I'm curious to see what others think....

I don't know about watching TV on a 2.5 screen, but I plan to play Madden2006 on it! [:p]

2.5 inch screen, it's usless unless you want to look through all of your IPOD's play list. They should have increased the size of the screen to at least 5 or 6 inches. I have a portable DVD player with a 7 inch screen, that' alomst bearable.

I have a 60gig iPod photo and am very happy with it. No need for the video version, although the slimmer chassis is nice...but then I'd have to buy a new cradle for the car and dock for home use. :( I'll just stick with my old, outdated one. :)

So my take is this is a first step. The only audience right now are the folks that take subways/buses on a regular basis. So people who currently listen to music and read a book, etc., can now watch ~20 minutes of a video program on their way to/from work. For long trips (airplane rides, etc.), I think people still want the larger screens like the portable DVD players to watch a full movie. But you aren't gonna take a device like that with you on your commute every day. The cross over that's missing in this first device would be something like TivoToGo. If you could record your own stuff, and take that w/ you, it would do help push the device, but the whole mess of video copyrights probably makes this painful to fully sort out and offer mainstream.

One thing I have heard about the video ipod is the battery life is very poor when watching a video. It was around 2 hours max battery time on 1 charge - this would hardly be enough for a long flight.

For listening to songs/audio, I think the ipod is great. For videos, I just don't see people watching movies on a device with a small screen and short battery life.

the video iPod is ideal for those with a 2hr commute, assuming you are not driving. Bus or Metro riders now have a way to watch an episode of TV or other video.

With Tivo going to offer a port in the future, that would really open the gates to a variety of programming. Until then we can all catch up on our favorite episodes of Knight Rider. :D

I have the 30Gig one and the video resolution is phenomenal.

I've uploaded about 8 full length movies from DVD to it, and have my entire CD collection on it. And still have about 9G of space available.[8D]

I get about 2 hours battery life for a video, which works for me during flights. And once the batteries gone during the flight, I turn to sudoku! :D
