Anyone know of a good local place that sharpens lawnmower blades? I know I could probably do it myself, but I haven't sharpened this blade in years and wouldn't mind having a 'professional' doing it...

    Thanks!

I have not used them for blade sharpening, but I'd give them a shot. I have been in there for parts, they seem to be knowledgeable. They are right over the Waxpool 28 bridge on the right side. Convoluted way to get in there but it can be done. They're next to Alpine Ski Shop.

You might find it more convenient to go ahead and get a spare. Then you could rotate the use, while one is in the shop you could still be in business.

I dont know what your gonna pay for sharping the blade - but sometimes it might be just as cheap to buy a new one.
Also, if you dont want to lug the mower to the shop there is a local guy:
    AJ's Mobile Repair Service
    (703) 581-0568
He will come out tune up the mower and shapen the blade for I think it was under $100 total.
    Give him a call.

Get yourself a Dremel tool with all the attachments, and extra blade sharpeners, and do it yourself. Just turn the mower on its side (carburator side up) and sharpen those suckers on the mower. It pays for itself with one use.

I don't mean to drag this thread into a "why don't you do it yourself" argument, but it is very easy to sharpen a lawnmower blade on your own. The blade comes off with a wrench, and all you need is a metal file and something against which to brace the blade while you file it (such as a vice or Black & Decker Workmate). It really is fast and easy.

But if you are intent on having it professionally sharpened, there is a knife store (Remington? Something else?) in Dulles Town Center that will probably sharpen it. It doesn't solve the problem of having to drive to Sterling, though.

Ooooh! Dremel! I forgot about that. I didn't have a Dremel when I last sharpened my blade, but I do now. I have a special lawnmower sharpening attachment, too (it came standard with the Dremel kit I bought for about $60 or so).

Scratch my last e-mail -- Dremel is the way to go! In fact, I can't wait until my blade needs to be sharpened again...

I've sharpened mine often. I do think at some point a professional with heavy duty tools can do more than a dremel.

Yea, I have a Dremel, and like I stated in my original post, I would probably do it myself. Issue is that I haven't been a good boy and it's been 5 years now since that blade was sharpened... I was thinking of getting it professionally sharpened this time around, and then I can do 'touch up' using my Dremel going forward. Buying a new blade might also be the way to go; I'll need to check out some prices to see what the difference is...

    Thanks for everyone's input!

Had good experience with Sterling Mower Repair as mentioned. Only problem is this time of the year, turnaround time might be longer. I had my mower tuned-up and sharpening which took 2 weeks to get back. And grass grows pretty quickly in that time span.....

I just checked and I think this time around I'll just buy a new blade. $10-$12 and a 2 mile drive sounds like a much better idea to me personally.

    any updates on this?

This should be like a $15 dollar job at any reasonable hardware store.. but those are long and far inbetween. Anyone find a place that will do this while you wait affordably?

Lawn and Leisure off old Sterling Rd does it while you wait for about $7. Buy a new blade $12-20

Thanks.. I ended up doing it with my dremel... it worked but not great results. I'd rather get a true cutting edge from someone with a good wide grinding edge.

I'll check them out next time.

Even new blades aren't all that sharp. Must be the lawyers :)
