My garage faces east so I get the morning sun to heat it up. It stays hot all day and that heat just radiates upwards into one of my sons bedroom. I've considered applying some heat reflective coating or installing a vent fan. Anybody else face this and, if so, what did you do?

If I can't figure out a way to cool it down, I may throw some lava rocks in there, pour on some water and open a steam sauna business!

Our bedroom heats up above the garage as well. We get the afternoon sun on it. I have a thermometer in there and watch the temperature. When it's cooler outside than in the garage I open the doors to try and cool the garage off. I am considering getting some paint additive that insulates and painting the ceiling of my garage (haven't done it yet cuz that ceiling is so high!). we have insulated and drywalled the garage a few years ago and that helped a little bit.

Hot garages are great to cook the garbage that you are required to keep in there. I just love the smell. ::sarcasm off::

I would much rather you keep your smells to your garage and the rest of us to keep our smells in our garages than smelling up the entire community.

Sarcasm On - The trash bins are such lovely additions to the exterior of the house don't you think?

I was thinking about putting an automatic venting fan in the garage.

Similar to an attic fan, you can easily install an auto louvered fan between studs so the garage gets ventilated (its also weather-proof).

Install the fan in addition to spray insulating the exterior wall. (Garage facing exterior walls were not insulated by VM).

AC installation is also an option. Portable/Window/Central can easily be fit into the garage. Just so happens I have an extra 2 Ton Goodman that I took out of service for a 3 ton that I could let go dirt cheap :)

If we had stayed in NoVA, this was something I was going to be doing this summer. Our house faced west, so the garage got the full brunt of the summer sun, and it did get warm in that garage. On days when we were both home from work, we'd open the garage doors (both with openers) about 10" to let some air in.

We were thinking about a thermostatically controlled attic fan with a decorative louver on the side of the garage.
