Hi folks- any recs on who to use to install a ceiling fan in our 2 story living room? I'd just as soon save the emergency room bills by having my husband rent a ladder and do it himself... :) if you wouldn't mind including a price, it'll help us compare what our neighbors have paid vs. what we are quoted...

    Thanks in advance!!!

I don't have any advice on who to contact, but I concur with your idea to farm it out...we did our own and it was tough. We rented a 22' ladder and had it delivered, but when we got it inside and tried to set it up we realized they had delivered a 24' ladder that wouldn't fit in our room no matter what we did. Even when we had the right size ladder it was really tough to do even when the electrical box was already in the ceiling.

We hired a handyman two years ago, he charged $ 75 for the labor (and it took quite a while) and $ 30 for the ladder rental.Very reasonable. But unfortunately he moved away. Many people have praised:

Actually we shifted our ceiling fan from the 2 story family room to a bedroom and replaced the fan with a chandelier. We contracted Dulles Lighting to do the work as they were also the firm from which we purchased the chandelier. They did some other lighting/wiring work for us as well. I do not recall the costs at this juncture but can attest to the professional and expedient work they did.

We bought our fan at Loews and they installed it. Seems the cost was about $125 for installation. 2 guys came with huge ladder and spent about one hour. The ceiling was prewired and it still took that long.

Try Craig at Ashburn Electric. I don't have his number right off, but he's listed in the broadlands newsletter. He just installed my foyer 2 story chandelier and was good and reasonably priced.

There shouldn't be any future threads about electricians. Craig at Ashburn Electric is the best there is, period.

Erica - Just wondering if Craig installed the fan with a Remote? We have a Cedarwood, he said this is the only way to power to the fan (I had asked that he install a wall switch, but it there would have been a large amount of drywall repair) Any thoughts would be great.

Also for those who have posted good ratings for Craig - did he do any type of Outside/Security lighting?...he gave us a price, but I am still shopping around

We are considering replacing the foyer chandelier. How much did he charge you?

I think it was $200 for the chandelier in a two story foyer. He took down my old one, assembled the new one from the box and hung it. He and another guy brought in a 14 foot a-frame ladder. It was a fixture from Home Depot on a 5 foot chain.

He did not install a ceiling fan or anything else for me.

Craig from Ashburn Electric installed a ceiling fan in our morning room and another one in our 2-story family room. The first time he installed just the ceiling fan in our morning room. After the installation, the fan didn't work and he didn't charge us. He is such a nice guy. We felt bad. It turned out that the fan was bad. So we bought another fan and had him come back to replace the bad one in the morning room and also had him install another one in the family room. He and his partner did a great job. For any future electrical work, I would not hesitate to contact him.

I second Craig at Ashburn Electric. He installed four fan rough-ins for us as well as added some outlets and an attic fan.

In terms of fan installation, it is more expensive to install a fan with a switch than one with a remote. The first option includes putting a switch on the wall. I don't have the numbers readily available but know that I also searched and asked around before hiring Craig. He gets rave reviews across the board. We will soon call him back for added lighting, additional outlets, and sensor switches also. He can do it all. Call Craig!!!

Pick up a day work in Sterling. Pay $80 and not only get your fan installed but get your lawn thached too!
They are there 7 days a week at the old Sterling Police station. And it is city approved!

no thanks- i'd rather go with someone whose been recommended and not take the chance on maybe getting a good day laborer, or maybe NOT. i'd rather pay more for the locally recommended businessman on this one.
