I am in the market for new carpet for the family room. Can you recommend a place for purchase and installation (quick, reliable, quality). Lowes, Home Depot perhaps?

Also, is there a particular carpet brand that is good. I need something that will hold up to wear and tear and stain resistant to a cat and a 13 month old.
    Thanks!

We just had our basement done and had our carpet bought and installed by Home Depot. We did several price estimates before deciding on Home Depot. We were pretty satisfied with the service, price, etc. The only thing is that you need to get the right carpet representative at Home Depot. We found out that not everyone knows the same thing. We had a representative named Tin. He knew how to work the Home Depot carpet ordering system and was very thorough. I don't remember the brand of the carpet..sorry.

If you're a Broadlands resident, don't forget about Pro Source. See their ad in the newsletter.

Went to Lowe's yesterday carpet shopping and there's just so many to choose from. Also, a lot more expensive than we anticipated. We're trying to do one 20x20 family room. Any other recommendations on price/service/type of carpet to buy?

    Thanks

    smheese-

I saw your question concerning carpet purchasing and other consumer concerns. Below are some web sites with links to assist in your research. I located them recently for someone else.

    consumerreports.org(Consumer Reports has valuable information.)

carpet-rug.com (Carpet trade industry association with great consumer advice.)

howtobuycarpet.com/new_page_12.htm (Carpet expert on consumer issues with all types of flooring, carpet, and related information. Best types to purchase for pets, allergies, kids, etc. Highly recommend this resource.)

Also, you may check out Sterling Carpet locally owned company.

I don't have first-hand experience, but I've heard good things about Select Carpets and Floors. It is located in Leesburg off 15 in the Wal Mart shopping center. The person who recommended them is a pretty high-maintenance type person and I know she would have high expectations to be met - and she was happy with them. :)

I'm no carpet expert but it's my understanding that a berber carpet holds up longer than most. I think there are some kinds of berber with "taller" loops that can pull sometimes, but the low height kind is good for higher traffic areas, kids, and pets.

    Just my $.02.

I went by ProSource about repairing a section of our hardwood floor and was surprised to find they don't install, they just sell you the materials. It was a good price in comparison to another quote I got, but has anyone used someone just as an installer along with ProSource?

    Thanks.

    > RE: Surprised at pricing

So what is a ballpark figure for carpeting a 20x20 room? High/Low/Avg?

To Broadlands residents (as the HOA is a member) most carpets are 50% off reg price and wood ceramic etc. is 30% off.

We used them for hard wood for most of the middle floor of our TH plus the steps and I believe all supplies was under 2000 including molding and 1/4 round. My brother in law does custom homes so he did our install so it was just what I needed but several of my neighbors have used them also

If you ask they will recomend several installers and 2 neighbors used different installers recomended by Pro source and both were happy with the results.

The only peice of advice I have is make sure you know exactly how much you need of what and be very specific. When we were getting the wood for the front of our steps we asked for a certain amount (we got that amount) but the way it was given to us we were not able to use all alot of it and had to much extra. If i had asked for each length to have been divisible by 42 I would have been fine but I ended up with several pieces where I had 30 inches extra but needed at least 40 thus a lot of waist
