I admit I am to blame for leaving my car unlocked in my driveway, but it is still sad to not trust your nieghborhood.

Parents - if you notice your kid with a Buck knife that they didn't have before - just know your kid is a thief and not just a prankster - and not a very good one at that.

Not sure if HOA keeps statistics to pass on to the sheriff to help increase local patrols - but if so, chalk another one up.

If you don't mind me asking, could you give a general location of the incident, so that folks in your immediate area are aware of the situation?

    Thanks!

This is not a "new" thing either.... at least as far as a similar thing happening several times near Hunters Green Square when I lived there. Several cars were broken into on several occassions and in one instance, a law enforcement person that lives in that area actually saw and chased several "perps" and confirmed that they appeared to be teens, possibly young adults. Some of this happened between 2 and 4 am.

The authorities (sheriff and state) had been told about it... and I would also encourage you to file a report with the sheriffs office. they publish those statistics in the Loudoun Easterner.

In our little hamlet an intruder took a garage door opener out of an open car, opened the garage door just enough to get in in the night, and was found in the kids room . . . much longer and uglier story, but for this purpose enuff to say more than just material things at stake here.

Wait a second, do you mean this happened here in Broadlands or in a previous home elsewhere?

Ok, stories like this whether they are true or not can really rile up a community (and Broadlanders can spun up for much less judging by these forums).
I for one, would like some more detail before getting spun up. Was this reported to the police? Was the individual arrested? Is this something you heard from another neighbor?

I am a bit offended by your doubt, and I think you chose your words poorly. There are better ways to ask for info in a forum like this. I am going to provide more info though so that others here will be prompted to watch their children very closely and keep their homes locked safe.

This happened just about 2 years ago, was both reported to and investigated by the Loudoun police, and to the best of my knowledge goes unsolved. I know the story first-hand.

An intruder opened an unlocked car and took out the garage door opener and a wallet containing personal info. He then cut the phone lines to the house and opened the garage door just enough to slide under. He entered the kids rooms wearing a "Scream" mask. A child awoke to this (how the child woke up I do not know, or want to know) and yelled. Not much more is public as to whether he was just standing/observing, trying to kidnap, molest etc., but the intruder ran from the house. Others in the immediate neighborhood also had their window screens cut, as apparently this individual was searching for a way in. The targeted family sold their house and left the area immediately.

Ashburn may be safe in relative terms as metro DC goes, but, for many of us, it is far from being as safe as we are used to if we came from elsewhere in this country. The point of me sharing this is so that you make sure that you are properly alarmed, take the time to use it, and think twice before letting your kids roam around unwatched.

ExRIGuy - "doubt" should be something everyone should exercise when reading posts on the web.

As for being offended, I apologize. But when you post a HIGHLY sensitive subject such as the one you did with little or no details, you are leaving yourself wide open for a barage of requests.

Requests for clarification to resolve open questions are important, so yes, I agree. Those are different than implying things like that I am looking to cause excitement, don't know the real story, or whatever else was meant. This is not some large anonymous forum, comparatively speaking, and I was merely suggesting in light of this that we on this board should be a bit more tactful.

This is a scary story especially when it involves kids.

My perspective on home saftey has always been light and believe it or not the main rooms the window coverings are not closed at night. Lots of light at night especially outside and in.

My reasoning nobody is going to break into a well lit home especially when people can see in. The downside is all your neighbors know what is going on good and bad ha ha ha ha

Also having two kids boys six foot four and in good shape (early twenties) still at home who stay up all night also helps. :)

I learned from a Japanese client many years ago that we open things up for safety not close things in. Makes a lot of sense to me.

Lee - what you're saying makes a lot of sense. I'm a daily walker both am and in the evening.....a lot of houses look dark and shades all drawn....like no one is home.

My car got hit last night. I lost an iPod and some of my other belongings were discarded in a neighbor's car down the street. Never thought I would have to worry about things like this around here.
