Private schools

Anyone have their kids at Loudoun country day? With the recent gang activity reported in Herndon, anyone enrolling kids in private school? We moved out of the inside the beltway area to get away from gangs and violence and wanted to use the public school system, but as the gang activity increases i am starting to wonder if I should go the private route.

 

Do not have a child old enough yet but private schools may interest us also for the same reason. It is a shame that we even have to consider it since Loudoun public schools are some of the best in the country.

 

Herndon is a small part of Fairfax County Public Schools.

My personal opinion is... save your money and send your children to Loudoun County Public Schools.

 

I have lived in many areas of the US. Once we got here to Loudoun County we decided to stay put until the last child was out of high school. Reason? These are the best schools we have found. I agree... save your money and stay in the public system. If you don't spend the money on private schools then maybe only one of you will need to work and the other parent will be able to spend time with the kids. (Maybe even both of you could switch every so often!) In my opinion spending time with your kids is the best way to keep them out of the gang scene. I was warned about drug problems and the like when my child entered middle school. We have not seen anything to worry about, her grades are good, we know all of her friends,and their parents. Spend TIME not MONEY on your kids

 

Just wanted opinions (pro or con?) on CFS in Ashburn. I heard they are accredited. Does anyone know about their credentials?

Our kids are in a private school and we like it for now. However, we are thinking about next year of checking out Loudoun County private schools? Any preferences?? We will stay where we are for now. Just curious of others experiences if any.

Also heard about Loudoun Country Day expansion? Any info would be helpful.

Gang activity in Herndon schools has been going on for quite some time. If you live in Broadlands your child will not be going to a Herndon school. Herndon is in Fairfax County and we obviously do not live close enough for your child to go there. I grew up in Herndon and went to Herndon Middle School and graduated from Herndon High and they were both fine schools when I attended (early 80's). When we moved back to the area we specifically did not choose to live in Herndon due to the gang activity that had started back in 2000. Both of our older boys go to Loudoun County public schools and we couldn't be more pleased with the public school system here. One attends Briar Woods and the other attends Hillside and will be going to Eagle Ridge next year. I guess I am kind of clueless as to why you would be worried about gangs in Herndon affecting you here.

Like I said my kids are in college or they say they are going. ha ha

With any school the biggest worry are durgs and alcohol and driving.

The more you can keep your kids in some kind of activities the less problems or hopefully.

I work at home and I am on a corner lot and I can see out my library through very large windows almost everything on this corner and way beyond. Kids are not as innocent as people think, especially mine when they were growing up and still are. It is amazing what they do when they think nobody is watching like hitting my friends expensive Lexus with sticks across the street no not the sheriff, they seem to leave him alone. ha ha ha Yep when you confront the parents they are many a time in denial about their kids. The fun people are the ones that walk their dogs and don't think they are being watched, especially the ones they let their dogs take a dump on someones property and don't clean it up. Yep I have a few pictures of several doing that in my backyard which adjoins the common area.They could be in for a big suprise next year with these pictures and future pictues and video when I finally landscape my yard the way I want to.

Anyway there are problems in all schools no matter if they are private or public as I know my kids have gone to both and always in nice areas. Durgs and driving are always the biggest problems especially from peer pressure. I would put gangs way down on the list especially around here. Peer pressure the the biggest way for kids to get into trouble. Which in a way is like gang.

The more my kids were busy the less problem they were, but they certainly they were not angels and still are not. ha ha

our son went to Christian Fellowship for 2 years only because of an issue we had with his age, and the public school district we lived in not being amenable to placing him in the proper grade.

CFS was great the first year, not so great the 2nd. The situation in my son's classroom was very volatile- the first teacher was fired, shuffling of subs until a permanent replacement was found, and then an awkward transistion that was pretty tough on the kids. the new teacher did her best, and my son still got great grades, but there were a lot of distractions and we were not at all impressed b the way the school handled the situation.

still- overal, I think CFS is a good school, but the quality of education is not higher than what we are getting at Hillside. If receiving a Christian education is important to you- then it's great- but if that's not an issue, public is just as good if not better.
