I've been reading this forum for several months and even though some of you won't understand the viewpoint of a single, 30-something homeowner in Ashburn (just a stone's throw from Broadlands) who goes to these area restaurants for both drinks and dinner, I have a fairly unique perspective on these joints. You see, by staying at these fine (and not so fine) establishments longer than your average Broadlands family patron, I tend to overhear interesting tidbits about the place (and other area places) from bartenders, managers and patrons and I tend to see some things that your average patron may not see (or want to see).

With that out of the way, there is no better place to start than the Original Steakouse & Sports Theater.

Ownership -- The original owner(s) sold the place several months ago to Osama El-Atari, who also owns the Buffalo Wing Factory franchise. Any recent changes can be attributed to him. As parents, you should be happy that Osama's restaurants hire mostly youngsters from the area. As parents, you should also be very afraid that Osama's restaurants hire mostly youngsters from the area.

Bar -- It has always been a smoky, blue collar crowd with your white collar types thrown in. Nothing special in the way of bartenders, but I would avoid the bottled beer as a certain bartender has a habit of putting her bottle opener in the waistband of her pants next to her backside, which can't be considered a good thing.

Food -- I have always found the steaks to be average or slightly better than average, but the temparature is usually off by one or two categories (i.e., if you order a medium well, you get something closer to medium rare). Now, most of you would probably send the steak back, but I would hesitate to do so at a place like this where food preparation is a job and not an occupation.

Intangibles -- Having an employee listed in the sex offender database is a definite minus (but don't worry parents, he was fired a couple of months ago) and the use of construction signs is cheesy (and probably illegal). The numerous big screen TVs in the bar is probably the only good thing I can come up with.

Rating (out of a six pack) -- One bottle of beer (but only if I open the bottle myself).

I agree with Nova BarFly, And I have a feeling that we have probably crossed paths b/c I usually hang out at the establishments for quite a while and have a good rapport with KP's staff, and the people at the steakhouse, well, basically every bar in the area ... with that said, the one tidbit about the menu at the steakhouse, it's a franchise, even if there weren't new owners it would still have changed.

ok ... since KPs and OSH (or "the dancehall" as we like to call it ... long story) are the two main spots for the single (I won't say younger .. see all ages in there) folk to hang ... what say ye on the comparisons ... which is better for what on the government sanctioned "six pack" scale.

I say tomato, you say toma(h)to.

I always find it amusing that when you make the circuit, you'll see familar faces who used to be at Broadlands Pub, who now go to KPs or Ashburn Pub. Or someone who used to go to Bungalow's or Ned Devine's, who now goes to the Original Steak House.

Which is better? That may be a loaded question. Personally, I prefer KPs, but that has to do with the fact that I respect the ownership, management and bartenders at KPs much more than that of the Steak House. I know KPs lost a few folks when they opened the new place, but it says something when you ALWAYS have the same strong personalities behind the bar (take note Broadlands Pub). Of course, OSH is much closer to may place -- and the law doesn't hang out in the parking lot -- which is a definite plus.

Basically, it depends on the mood. If I wanted to be alone and watch TV at the bar, there was always 321 Ashland. If I wanted a crowded upscale bar, there was Bonefish. If I wanted the traditional smoke-filled bar, there was OSH. Having said all that, Clyde's fits the bill on most accounts.

So what's the story behind "the dancehall"?

Ditto on the KP's, but since I moved to Broadlands I have not enjoyed closing the bar like I used to...which leaves OSH, Broadlands pub or Clydes. I like Clydes but drinks really add up quickly there. KP's has been my second home for many years and it's nice even though I'm not as regular in there they still remember me.

Years back, a friend of mine (who is quite funny ... very dry sense of humor) was calling it "The Original Steakhouse and Dance Hall" instead of "Sports Theater". How she lighted on that, I have no idea, but its probably due to the size of the place and the hardwoods .... ANYWAY, it has since been shortened to "The Dancehall" and it stuck. Once you hear it, it stays ... you'll see. ALL of you will be calling it that now! ;)

ps. The irony is that it really IS a dancehall now.

ya know- the beauty of having so many choices within a few miles is that everything doesn't HAVE to cater to the same crowd! you can get everything from small smoky crowded dive to upscale jacket required lounging within 3 miles of any home here. within 10 miles you can get piano bar and martinis IN THE SAME PLACE as 21 and up smoke-machine enhanced music pumpin' dance floor jumpin' music.

this is to NO ONE in particular-
just because something doesn't fit YOUR taste doesn't mean it should be run down as a crappy joint to be run out of town... i think our opinions in here can have an effect on the opinions of lurkers and new residents to the community, and we should criticize responsibly.

most of us have very litle free time and we enjoy using it wisely, so wasting a night out at the place with a "bad rep" would suck! i know WE have used the forum as a barometer for restaurants that we hit or skipped, for referrals for contractors, etc.

just a thought... :) PARTY ON!!

A sleazy bar has no business being 100ft from where children sleep.

I think sleazy is going a tad far Homer. I have been in a few times in the past couple of months and there is nothing unruly, unsavory or innapropriate going on.
I am willing to bet you even have neighbors who frequent the place.

And it is the patrons who make a bar sleazy.

I wouldn't say (health inspections aside) that the steakhouse is sleazy. Its a sports bar. Every time I have been in there, all I see is people sitting around yelling at the screens as one would see in any sports bar. No "questionable ladies" running around, no hijinks in the bathrooms and no one doing anything wierd in the public are. I suppose some people would prefer that there be no drinking establishments anywhere near a residential area, but thats not realistic.

While I'm still not sold on the food over there, I do admit the Steakhouse is a damn good place to watch the games. I was up there yesterday and the place was rocking.

And, for those of you like Kirkpatrick's, Matty is now behind the bar at OSH. That's a good step creditbility wise for the place, and he'll probably draw some of his old KPs regulars. And, believe it or not, the other bartender actually had the bottle opener in her back pocket and not down the back of her pants. Impressive.

While I get the point your trying to make, did you actually go over the night they were there? There wasn't nothing sleezy about it, they had on jeans and a tight shirt, which is more clothing than you see in most establishments these days. The MC for the event could barely be heard, and all in all I thought the night sucked, but it would have been safe to have children there with no concerns.

Junkettes = sleazy bar. That's a good one. I've seen more skin behind the bar -- and waiting tables -- at the Wing Factory and several other joints in the area. And I won't even comment on the age factor of the non-Junkettes.

I think Homer is just upset that Jack Diamond and crew haven't made a local appearance for him and the soccer mom crowd.
