I did not mention anything about excessive drinking. And that is not the alcohol that is the problem, it is the decision making of the "user".

Careful! This IS Virginia, after all. The tobacco belt. :eww:

    Signed,

She who has never taken a puff of ANYTHING in her entire life and wishes, along with you, that smoking was outlawed altogether.

p.s. I wonder... there are so many of us non-smokers who complain about smoky places and refuse to go to places that are smoky... how is it that some businesses worry about losing business if smoking were in fact banned here in VA? Seems to me it would be the opposite. There are some places I WOULD actually go to if they didn't allow smoking... places that I now avoid.

Everyone here has free will. You either choose to go someplace that allows smoking or you don't. There are lots of places that don't allow smoking, and a few that do. What's the issue? Exercise your free will.

I don't see why people need the government to protect them from places that they have an absolute right to avoid frequenting. IMO these people are trying to enforce their moral views re. smoking upon the population as a whole. If you don't like that a business allows smoking, don't go in it. If the restaurant/bar doesn't want to risk losing your business they will convert to non-smoking. That's the beauty of a free market economy.

Oh, and BTW, I have never smoked a single cigarette (or joint, for that matter), although I smoke a cigar every once in a while, and almost never at a bar or restaurant. I avoid going to places that allow smoking. Sometimes, though, when I'm in the mood for some Montana's wings and their awesome wedge salad, I'll exercise my free will, go into the bar, and accept that my clothes and hair will smell like a chimney when I leave. (Montana's is a bar in East Cobb a suburb of Atlanta, and their wings beat the snot out of anything I had in Northern VA, but that's an issue for another post.)

I like having that choice, though, and don't need the government to make it for me--thank you very much.

Pats, (or anyone for that matter) ...
please to be naming some non-smoking establishments in the NOVA area. I know of only one, The Clarendon Ballroom. I love NOT smelling like a three-day old ashtray when I leave there, but alas, its kind of far. This being the tobacco belt, non-smoking places are in WAY short supply here, however, this might not be the case in Atlanta.

(D&M fans will recognize the above syntax)

i will say, and I think everyone agrees, the fact that Clydes has 2 non smoking bars is great :), I for the same reason that marielaveau mentioned spend less time at places like KP's due to their poor smoke ventilation

Sanb Vito's, Buffalo Wing Factory are two close by locations that are 100% non-smoking.

Asked Van Metre about this tonight - they indicated that Glory Days' team was at the site within the last day or so making plans to begin working on the place.

praise be to the non-smoking gods

good to know. Now a few more places to hang without the smoke.

/rant on/ I have long hair ... and whenever I come home from going out I have to take a shower and wash my hair before I go to bed because I cannot stand the smell. I accept it as part of my life, but I sure love it when I go to CA or NY and go out and NOT come home smelling icky. /rant off/

Before I saw beahmer's & vacliff's responses to the rumor that Glory Days won't be opening in Broadlands, I sent an email directly to Glory Days. This is the response that I received:

"TOTALLY UNTRUE. We are under construction now and hope to open in March. We
    >will need 100 employees, so please spread the word. We are eager to be part
    >of your community.
    >
    >
    >
    >Jeffrey Newman, President
    >
    >Glory Days, Inc,"

I am glad that Glory Days is coming and sorry to spread concern, but thanks for confirming that... I can't wait for them to open, within walking distance!

When you go to a restaurant's Web site and fill out an online form about your experiences at their establishment, do you expect a response (assuming you gave your number and e-mail address)? If so, how long should it take for them to respond to you?

For what it is worth, it's been a week since I sent feedback to Clyde's on their Web site and no response. That's not only weak but highly unprofessional.

I talked to a buddy who used to work at one of their establishments in DC and he told me an interesting story. Employees of a certain branch of the federal government used to frequent one of the bars located near their headquarters building. They asked to have the TV turned on so they could see the news and/or the stock market close, which would help gauge what was going on the world, which they needed to know as a part of their job. Management refused. Management was then told that if they denied the request, things previously overlooked by their federal neighboors would now be enforced. Not surprisingly, management all of a sudden allowed the feds to watch TV in the bar, going against corporate policy. At least justice was served in at least one of their stuffy, customer-be-damned joints.

Don't normally post much here, but I must say that I was in Clyde's the other day and asked the TV be put on so I could try and find out the score of my alma mater's basketball game. I was told the TV's must remain off until an actual game is on per their ploicy. I was very surprised to say the least. I will not go hang out there on a casual basis anymore.

To change the subject: I had calamari at Clyde's the other night and it was excellent - by far the best item I have had there so far. Tossed in garlic butter and minced peppers . . . .

I have been to Clyde's twice, each time not totally impressed. Each time, everyone in our party ordered different items for dinner. Each item was rated unanomously to be a B- by all. I honestly think the decor is outstanding but the food is mediocre.

I agree - I always thought Clydes is highly overrated for the food..and expensive for what you get. Decor is beautiful, best of any of the other Clydes....but food is nothing to get excited about!
