Sorry, but I think trying to make a Van Metre connection to this owner is laughable. If they did want to promote a business and somehow profit from this transaction, they would have given it to an owner of a business in the Southern Walk Center. They do own that one, unlike the Saul Center.

Did any of you even go to the drawing? It was highly publicized and even on the radio, we went to check it out. It was a drawing, all of the finalists were there in person and they pulled the winner out of a bin that spun around where all of the finalists entries were in there. They even drew names for other prizes. Trying to link something like that is ridiculous.

I always like a good conspiracy theory, but this one does sound like a stretch. However, if anyone feels the raffle/sweepstakes was rigged, contact the local prosecutor and ask for an investigation to be launched.

Of course, there are other conspiracy theorists who think that all or most of the leadership of Loudoun County government is corrupt and run by the developers (see the threads and numerous posts in these forums). I'm not quite convinced, but if you believe that theory then you will say that there would be no way that a developer could be found guilty of anything around here.

You just smeared a local citizen by even implying that there was a conspiracy of some sorts. Next time, please do some research before smearing people in public.

What was your point? What were you trying to accomplish?

Maybe you don't like the guy's restaurants, but as far as I can tell, he's taken the risk to put up his own capital to try to turn a profit...and that's what this country is about.

You owe the gentleman an apology for even bringing this up publicly.

I do not personally know the gentleman in the picture who is holding the key, but have met and know the gentleman who was included in the other picture (and is a relative of the winner). In addition, I personally know his girlfriend and most of their other friends. Anyone assuming anything negative about these guys, is way off base. Truely the nicest and most honest people I have ever met before.

Luckily, repeat health code violations are not cause for disqualification. Personally, I'm sick of hearing about these guys and their six figure cars, seven figure houses and sweepstakes winnings.

And T8erman will find this hard to believe, but it has nothing to do with race. In fact my bias has to do with one thing -- wealth. Like the majority of you, I'm a bit jealous. Unlike most of you, I'm not afraid to admit it.

I haven't met the winner nor any of his family, but I know people who have. Some people like them, some people don't for whatever reason, but that's the case with any restaurant owner. But at the end of the day, the only thing that separtes them from everyone on this board is a stigmatized last name -- and maybe a much fatter bank account.

How refrshing to admit you are jealous because of money, Barfly?!

The question is: why. I always find it amusing that so many in this area think everyone else is rich. NO ONE ever thinks they are rich!

I just don't understand resentment against the wealthy, especially if they have acquired wealth through hard work, taking risks, good investments, etc. And that is how most wealthy people became wealthy.

Strange but I don't think of this part of Loudoun even comes close to being very wealthy. good incomes yes, but that is true of all areas like this across the country. What makes this county have a high average, there is very little poor here to bring the average down like other counties in the country. I don't see what I call mansions around here nice homes but far from what I would call a big or custom home. I quess what I think of wealth, peoples homes are like what I design that are 15,000 sq ft 20,000 sq ft 30,000 sq ft and bigger now someone who can afford a home like that is wealthy. Homes around here would be considered almost track homes in other parts of the country such as Texas for a lot less money and finished much nicer. So I guess it is all realative from your prespective. Nobody here builds a custom home. In Texas if you spent the kind of money people do here it would be a custom home all the way thru. Anyway Loudoun being the wealthiest county is very very misleading because there is very few poor to bring the average down.

People don't think that they are rich, but they don't think anyone else isn't??? You two summed up the reason people "resent the rich"! I see a lot of wealthy people living in large tract homes in this part of the county. But the part of being "wealthy" that is resented is the attitude - not that people declare themselves wealthy, but that they don't realize there are a lot of other people living in the area that don't have the same discretionary income they have. Statements like "everyone can afford to give x to the school, to the church, etc..." Statements like "you shouldn't have a car that doesn't look nice parked in front of your house", "We go out to eat at these restaurants x times a week and aren't treated good enough", "where can I have my toddlers birthday party for $500", etc...
A little hint - if your biggest problem is where your neighbors keep their garbage can, you probably are fairly wealthy!

Generally speaking, I agree there are a lot of "middle income" folks here. Many are well educated and living comfortably with nice jobs. Some may "want to" and some may "have to" be dual income familes?

Personally, I would not say "rich" but that is a relative statement. The "wealthiest county in the country" probably comes from the fact that the cost of living in this area does not allow for many "poor" to bring the stats down and there are many sizeable custom homes/estates/wealthy folks dotted in this county (Western Loudoun?) bringing the #s up.

Nice to remain humble and count your blessings.

My biggest problem with Mr El Etari (sp?) here isn't that he is wealthy. I am all for the American dream, which he is a prime example of. What rubs me wrong is someone who already has "seven figure homes" and several "six figure cars" enrolling in such a sweepstakes. Why bother? Winning is meaningless other than just another victory, it's taking the chance away from someone who probably needs it a lot more, and most importantly it just paints a bad image to the very people who helped make you wealthy in the first place. Of course he has already suggested by his other actions that the latter isn't high on his priority list.

I had to add in my two cents because I was at the VanMetre drawing with my friend, who was one of the finalists.

When the name in the Grand Prize drawing for this townhome was announced, the gentleman who came forward to receive the oversized key looked completely nonplussed. It was if he had just won a cup of day-old coffee. First we thought he must be in shock, but then he took the key and began to walk away before pictures were taken and a big deal was made. Those of us in the crowd didn't know how to react. We wanted to cheer and clap, but we were so taken aback by his reaction. It was a complete let-down. We ended up making a big deal over the next few finalists who won American Express giftcards and then the three who won Redskins gift baskets. I was the last winner announced for a basket - it contained very nice prizes!

When I visited these forums and found out who it was that won the key, his reaction made a little more sense. Who needs a small 2-bedroom townhome when you own two restaurants and a nice house somewhere in this area? Still, there were plenty of people at the drawing who could have used the home and I just wish the luck had gone to someone else.

Except what people pay for track homes here could buy such 10,000ft manisons living else where. So is 'rich' absolute amounts? Or relative amounts?

    Welcome to the forums!

Who needs a TH like this when you have all that? I would assume he can flip it for cash.. so unless he doesn't like that either I would think that would be at least some what interested :)

I would not go that far, but what you what get is a custom designed home maybe a little bigger or the same size if you include the basement in the footage or probably not that big if the basement footage is included. You would get a lot of custom woodwork and appointments. Custom designed exterior and floor plan so you can tell one home from another. You would not be saying you live in such and such a builders model. You would say we custom designed this home for us and our personalities for the ground up:)
It is specially designed just for us.

You would more then likely be living with the same kind of people with the same kind of salaries. Rich is far far beyond a hundred grand a year average I start it at a million a year income. For the average professional a hundred grand is pretty average. Personally I say we live in a very nice average professonal county mostly white many kids and almost no poor. The no poor and little lower middle class is what screws up the average.

Exciting news to win a house of any size. If he does not need the home, maybe there will be a special give away prize at the Steakhouse??
And as for advertising the big giveaway, maybe the blinking sign/pick up truck will come back?
