Isn't that the truth. "Can't we just all get along" famous words of Rodney King, even though he was somewhat a scumbag he did not deserve what happen to him. A lesson here that still seems to have not been learned by many!!!

at this point I don't even CARE if we get along- we don't HAVE to like anybody for any reason. Cynical yes- but bottom line- like who you like and be politely indifferent to those you don't. you don't have to be friends to be friendly- to help a fellow man when he's in trouble, regardless of race, sex, age or social class.

I jut want race to stop cropping up where it's NOT an issue. there's enough times when racism really IS a problem- there's no reason to make up racial tension. same problem with women who fake a sexual assault- it calls a REAL assault into question. oops- i digress....

sorry- this is a sore spot with me....

When my father was a Marine stationed during different times at several southern bases, my mother tried several times to have a meeting of the wives to press for better treatment of blacks on the base and eslewhere. She was met mostly with uncomfortable or angry stares, and received a letter from the commander of the base, expressing his interest in her stopping these meetings. She even had a cross burned on her yard. We are white. She wrote a book about everthing she thought about, but nobody would publish it even years later.

My mother took us to her tulips when we were young and showed us how all the different colors were still the same flower. She likened this to people as well.

Seeing how "worldly" the makeup of our children's classes are, they don't even see color anymore, which I've seen evidence of when helping in the classroom. Perhaps that will finally change things...except for the few who inherit their biases from their parents who cannot change.

The fact is, a person will either like you or they won't. You can't be friends with everybody. Personalities don't always click.

But you can be a person who always takes the higher road when dealing with others. Lend a helping hand when needed. Don't just walk by. Smile when someone says "Hi" to you, don't pretend they are not there. My grandmother sent this to me when I was about 15:

    THE VALUE OF A SMILE

"A SMILE costs nothing and yet it is of tremendous value.

It enriches the receiver without impoverishing the donor.
It lasts but a moment, yet the memory of it may beautify all the year's of one's life. No one is so rich that he may pass it by. No one is so poor that he may not give it. A smile makes a happy home happier; it is a help in social and business contacts; it is the outward sign of friendship.

A smile rests the weary, raises the flagging spirit, consoles the grief-torn heart. It is, in short, and antidote to all our griefs. Nevertheless, a smile cannot be bought, neither can it be lent or stolen. It is of no value except when freely given.

Should you meet someone on your way who is reluctant to smile at you be generous with yours. For none needs a smile more than him who is unwilling to give it."

This is a wise thing, and can be followed through in the way you react with others.

Redon1, I agree that race should get to the point of being a non-issue. I don't think we are there yet.

What did you think of Virginia expressing "contrition" for its role in slavery? See from FOX news: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,249103,00.html

that's a whole lot of thought going into to something NONE of those lawmakers was personally responsible for...

i think it's empty and ridiculous. what does their profound regret do for anyone who was effected by slavery? and reparations? PULEEZE. we've (black people) been afforded ample opportunities to go after the american dream- my generation- for the most part- only suffers at OUR OWN hand. My father's generation- now THEY suffered. segregation, horrible treatment in the military, lousy medical care, horrible public treatment, humiliation... THEY had real problems.

i sit around on a message board grousing about kids ringing my suburban home's doorbell at 2am... I don't need VA's regret, atonement, apology or contrition. none of us do.

can you people start another "race" thread post and please drop the subject on this post. I think this is supposed to be about the Steakhouse owner winning a house. We are waaaaayyyyy off topic.
    Thanks!

looking back, I used a poor choice of words :) I meant to ask my fellow man (man, according to the American Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson) to start a new thread for the "other" topic.

To get back on topic, I love steak. However, the quality and service at the OSH are horrible. The fact that they had that "very Classy Caddy" and its huge sign parked around the community just gives us another reason to head down the road to Clydes, Bonefish, or Del Ray.

And, redon1, I agree that the passage of the act of contrition accomplishes little. But, given the politics of the parts of Virginia outside of the DC suburbs (Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, and now Loudoun), I would have expected to see an announcement calling for a return to slavery (like "Take me back to ol' Virginia.") Remember the southern Virginia State legislator who recently said "blacks should get over slavery" and that "Jews need to apologize for killing Christ."

Proving my point that the gesture is empty. :)

you know this board really is influential- we used to go to the steakhouse at least once a month- some time 4 times a month. since the negatives reviews came in on this site i just haven't seen clear to try it again. i can't stand wasting money on a disappointing meal, and i find myself just choosing other options now... sad. i really need to go again and judge for myself, but how i HATE parting with my cash on a poorly reviewed place!!!!

I'm with you redon1. Thankfully we have many other options today... and more to open soon. Who needs OSH any more? Maybe they're trying to carve their niche with all of the new restaurants opening lately. I, for one, don't fit into that niche. Maybe they don't care.

the problem is i USED to fit into that niche. i HATE to see a good thing go bad. the last nail in the coffin was learning that it's the same owner as the wing place- i HATE that place. the breading on the wings is indescribably UN-FOOD-like... Glory Days is a comin and Fosters is beef of the gods.... :) OSH better get great again or they'll be gone...

Not a wing person, so I've never tried that place. But I USED to enjoy the mahi salad from OSH. Oh well. I can make my own. Or substitute it with a fabulous burger from Fosters.

It seems to me that the OSH has recently been more crowded than ever! I think he has been successful at attracting a bigger crowd.

No Worries Home Giveaway Grand Prize Winner
Monday February 12, 1:10 pm ET

Sweepstakes Winner Announced in One of the Region's Biggest Promotions
ASHBURN, Va., Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Van Metre Homes has announced the grand prize winner in their NO WORRIES home-giveaway campaign, Mr. Belal El- Etari. The grand prize, a brand-new Stone Springs Tyler model condominium home at Van Metre's Stone Ridge Community -- a prize valued at an amazing $415,000 -- was awarded at the final NO WORRIES Home Giveaway Sweepstakes Event. The event was held on January 20th, 2007 at Van Metre's award-winning Stone Ridge community.

At the grand prize drawing event, finalists and attendees registered to win exciting door prizes, enjoyed refreshments, and had their picture taken with the Redskins cheerleaders and legendary former Redskins offensive tackle, Joe Jacoby, who drew the name of the grand prize winner. Van Metre Homes is proud to be the only builder offering such a grand-scale promotion in the Nation Capital region in 2006.

Mr. Belal El-Etari, the grand prize winner, was one of 30 finalists in the drawing for the grand prize. Mr. El-Etari was visiting Van Metre Homes' Broadlands community when a sales representative encouraged him to register. "Often people feel that sweepstakes are rigid and are too good to be true, but this is not. There was no catch," says Mr. El-Etari.

The grand prize winner was given the choice of accepting the Stone Springs Tyler model condominium home or $415,000 credit towards any new Van Metre Home or Marquis Custom Home. He will be taking the $415,000 credit towards the purchase of a new Van Metre Home and is looking at Van Metre's award-winning Broadlands community. "This is a great opportunity and a great jump start to my future," says Mr. El-Etari. He goes on to say, "I want to thank Van Metre. They have treated me so well and have answered all my questions, this has really been great!"

Van Metre Homes is part of The Van Metre Companies, a family-owned, Northern Virginia based residential development and homebuilding firm founded in 1955.
