Please make sure you clean all the snow and ice off the top of your cars before leaving your house. I saw many near accidents, and one accident because of people that neglected to clean off their cars. There were large blocks of snow and ice flying off many peoples cars on 28 earlier today, and they almost caused a few accidents with people trying to swerve around it. The accident I did see was a woman who hit someone because she couldn't see when her block slid in front of her windshield....

    Just a friendly reminder....and a tad bit of a rant ;-) Thanks!

Here is another reminder, please remove all the snow from sidewalks on your property. There are lots of homes with snow/ice still on the sidewalks. It's your responsibility to remove snow/ice nlt 24 hours after the last snow fall.

No kidding - one of my neighbors couldn't get it done with a snow-blower. This stuff is hard as granite!

Yes, use a standard spade shovel and elbow grease. It might take you a while, but if you have a sidewalk on your property, it needs to be done.

it took me about 2 1/2 hours to do my 2/3 of my driveway. So I feel your pain, but it still needs to be done.

In Pennsylvania, there is a new law that you must clear the snow off your car before you drive off. Something like a $200 fine ...

What about the HOA clearing off common area sidewalks

Does anyone know why this has not occured at all? It is now at least 72 hours and no effort appears to have been made!

Ice picks, people. They work very well on ice. As for the snow and ice frozen on vehicles - last Wednesday I was driving to work on Dulles and approached a car covered with ice and they cleared only the windshield on the driver's side. It looked like a peep hole - good grief, that's pure laziness IMO.

Ice pick??? Those are fine if you want to make a cocktail. I think alot of people are being a tad too critical about shoveling this time around. This stuff is NASTY! This is the worst stuff we have seen in Loudoun in many a year. This ice, IMO, is worse than the double-whammy of snow we got back in 94, 98, 02 or any other year.

As I said in another post, I am very particualr (ok, ANAL!) about keeping shoveling my driveway and sidewalk after a snow. But to be honest, I did the bare minimum this time around.
The time and effort dealing with this ice is not worth the results

My son responded to a few inquiries today to help clear some driveways and sidewalks. At one house, he spent three hours just getting the driveway done and I could see him working the whole time.

He ended up spending about six hours working trying to get this concrete loose from 2 homes. He's a hard worker, but I think this ice kicked his butt.

So if you need someone to shovel the snow while you are at work next time BEFORE it turns to concrete, give my son a shout and he'll have your driveway, stairs and sidewalk cleaned before you get home from work.

Good for your son! Great way to make some $$,

I loved when it snowed when I was a teeanger. I had several regulars that I would shovel for and I would often walk the neighborhood looking for unshoveled driveways. I would make a couple hundred bucks most times it snowed and that was back in the 70's! Imagine what rates teens could charge now! :D

Yep, one of my favorite memories as a kid. So I'm glad he's doing this.

But I can honestly say I've never cleared anything as tough as this ice. The light fluffy stuff is so much easier on the back :)

I agree 100% and unfortunately, we have a large driveway. (heavy sigh) I sure do miss the old townhouse driveway sometimes. :)

Just as an FYI on to why it appears that no movement is being made on some of the streets and sidewalks:

Our contractors have been out enforce trying to get these roads and sidewalks done, however, since the ice is so thick and takes a very long time to crack through they are having to spend a lot of time at one location. Trucks are breaking, calling in for extra support is not coming as quickly because all other areas are having the same complaints and problems. They are trying to put sand down to at least off set sliding, and are now putting salt down as well to at least make the roads passable.

The sidewalks are being worked on after the roads are cleared or as they can manage to fit them in.

I agree this is a problem, but all areas throughout the county are experiencing this and there are only so many trucks, personnel, etc to go around.

The HOA is trying it's best to get it all done, but the same problems arise with our contractors as those that are occuring with VDOT too. Remember the HOA is not responsible for many of the streets in Broadlands, so if your street is maintained by VDOT you need to call the county to state your frustration. This list can be found in the newsletter.

I can assure you it is not for a lack of effort that more progress hasn't been made.

I would again state that it is the responsiblity of the homeowner to clear the sidewalks in front of your homes. Remeber school is opening on Tuesday and we don't want children walking in the streets because your sidewalk wasn't cleared off.

All members of the HOA (Wes included) have been handling calls from frustrated residents and while we agree that this isn't a great situation we are trying to make the sidewalks, etc safe and clean.

Yes, an ice pick. Not the "little" hand held ones. Either you haven't lived in inclement weather or you're having too many cocktails:rolleyes:

Me and a friend were out there yesterday clearing some of the ice on my porch/sidewalk and driveway.

Some of the areas were solid ice and it was taking quite a long time trying to breakup some of the spots, plus marking up the concrete where we were striking the ice with shovels. He suggested pouring hot water on it.

So we got some pitchers of hot water from the tap and poured it on the frozen spots and I was amazed at how almost instantly the icy areas would disappear.

The excess water was absorbed into the surrounding snow/ice and soon after pathway was cleared and dry.

So then I started wondering if I hook a hose up to the faucet in the muck room and ran the hose out front, I could have a hose that could spray the hot water out there to clear the sidewalk / driveway.

Considering the temps during the day are above freezing, this sounded like it might be an easier way to clear off the ice.

    Has anyone tried this before?

Is there any legal liability associated with not cleaning the ice off your car and then having it dislodge and cause personal or property damage ?

    Negligence, perhaps?
