This may be a long shot, but I need one of those wooden things to nail to the outside of our second floor french door as a safety guard rail.
The door is supposed to go out to a deck, but we don't have a deck. For some reason there wasn't a fence-type thing to block the door when
we bought the house but we need one to bring it up to code.

So if you happen to have one around somewhere, I would be glad to take it off your hands, either for a price or, even better, for free ;). Maybe you built a deck recently and still have the rail that blocked the door prior to the deck being built?

Thanks in advance for any help!

It's strange - I took a walk through our neighborhood and only found one place that had the guard rail covering the door. We *ARE* required to have one in Loudoun County, aren't we? Instead of a door guard when we bought our current place it had a strip of crown molding screwed across the top of the door on the inside so that it can't open. Is that enough to meet the code? Anyone?

I just love the "doors to death" as I call them. Have you tried Home Depot?

Watch that first step - it's a doozy!

Seriously, I bought the wood at Home Depot and the nice guy from Mr. Handyman put it together and put it up for us. Still don't know the name, but now we're up to code for selling our home!

If it is not upto the code, how did the the county inspection get through? Can't you talk to the builder about it and get it done by them as it is there duty to have it done?

I don't know the particulars - when I walked around our neighborhood I only saw one house with the gate thing on it. I didn't know what to think about whether or not it was required, but our realtor said she thought it would be and I agreed. When we purchased our place it was the hot hot market and we waived the inspection so I don't know if it would have been an issue then. Still, other places around our neighborhood have been bought and sold and don't seem to have them, and I don't understand why.

The good news is that we have one now and we're on the market! Anyone want to buy a townhouse with a special, apparently unusual, safety feature? ;)

We put a deck on our house last summer and ended up throwing ours out. We'd have gladly given it to someone who'd asked. I'd suggest you look for a house with a new or work-in-progress deck and see if they'll donate it to you.
