This is sort of a delicate situation so I want to see what others think before I proceed. The neighbor behind me has a dog that poops in a particular spot in their yard, which happens to be right in the line of sight of my kitchen window where I spend a lot of time.

I contacted the HOA about it and they said it's their yard and there's not much I can do about it other than talk to them politely. They did say it's a different story if I can smell their dog poop from my window, though.

I have decided to take pictures of this section of their yard and will forward them to the HOA...hopefully they will send a letter to these slobs and they will clean up after their mutt every single time it poops. (Right now they clean the area about twice a week)

What do y'all think? Maybe shaming someone with an HOA letter will change their behavior!;)

it's their yard man.. I don't think there is much you can say about it.

If its a mess that stinks up the neighboring properties.. I could understand.. but beyond that...

Twice a week seems reasonable to me.

It's their yard so you have a few options:

    1. You could actually just go talk to them, but I wouldn't start out the conversation calling them slobs, ha ha.

    2. If it bothers you that much, you could use a pooper-scooper and pick it up yourself in between their pick-up times.

    3. If you have a teenager, you could force them to pick it up as part of their chores :)

To get the HOA involved in something like this seems over the top, especially since they are cleaning it up regularly a couple times per week. If they were just leaving it to pile up for weeks on end, that's different.

Most of all, just go enjoy the beautiful weather, chill and don't let someone's dog poop ruin your day! good luck.

agreed two times a week is reasonable for picking up poop (honestly you're lucky they pick it up that frequently!). seriously though...it is *their* property. i honestly can't even imagine what this neighborhood would be like if we all voiced our issues with what people (and their kids and animals, etc.) do in their own yards. if it bothers you that much, do the right thing and try to talk with the owners before getting the HOA involved.

Can you plant anything in your yard in front of the dog poop patch that would block your view? A couple of large planters with summer flowers might be a quick fix.

    Quoted from several sites: :)
    Q. Doesn't dog poop make good fertilizer?
    A. Dog poop contains bacteria from your dog's digestive system that can be passed along to plants. A person can become ill by eating fruits or vegetables from a plant "fertilized" with dog poop. Don't use your dog's poop as fertilizer!

Not on the other hand you could use it to heat your house potentially:

I don't think the HOA should get involved in this at all.

2 times a week seems like a very nice neighbor.

If I found out you tried to get the HOA on my case I would make it a point to not clean that one spot.

Always talk with a neighbor first.

We have a large dog (with large poops) and you honestly can't see the poops unless you really lok for them! Smelling them is another matter. I think that twice a week is a really diligent pet owner.

Twice a week is diligent??? It should be done daily - would you flush your toilet only twice week? Poor dog!

I "know" that you are kidding about this analogy between cleaning a yard and flushing a toilet.

Owners don't clean a yard for their pets; they clean a yard for their kids and their neighbors. I flush the toilet for my wife :p

REALLY! I guess they're not doing it for the dog OR the family and kids - well perhaps they can tend to it for the neighbors sake.

I have two neighbors that allow their dogs to pee and poop on the deck. Now, come summer with the heat (trust me) twice weekly does not cut it when the right breeze hits it.

And, no, I wasn't kidding but I'm glad you flush after your wife. Nice guy:)

I think you are amazingly luck to have a neighbor who cleans up 2 times a week. Now the one who allows them to go on the deck? they need some real help. My guess is you probably don't own a dog, and most likely never have. I think you really need a reality check with wishing they would clean up the dog waste more than what they are already doing.

If they're leaving dog waste on a deck, the county health department can go after them. There was a situation like that I'm aware of in Ashburn Village.
