What happened to the street lights on claiborne between waxpool and broadlands blvd

    On my way to safeway yesterday, I noticed the street lights were out - along the walking trail on claiborne between waxpool and broadlands blvd. Can someone care to explain what happened to these lights?

    Kris, we have been having repeated issues with that section of lights for a while now, ranging from blown sensors, to flooding of the control box.

    I've informed Wes about the latest issue (lights have been out for 3 days now) and we're having it fixed.

    I'm not sure. I'm still looking for an explanation of why the lights in SW are STILL not on! ;)

    And what about Ridgeway and Highview Trail? Those lights were installed a bit ago and they're not on either.

    I'm assuming that the ones on Broadlands Blvd near Clydes and in OP finally got turned on ... right ?

    FYI, the section of lights along the path on Claiborne, between the tunnel and Vestal's Gap were fixed late yesterday, and the lights we operating normally again last night. Turns out that a HUGE colony of ants decided to take residence in one of the controller boxes; from what Wes told me this morning, the electrician had never seen anything like this before. Anyhow, looks like we're good to go again.

    Please let me know if you notice any more sections of lights that seem to be 'out' and I'll work with Wes to resolve any issues/coordinate repairs needed.

    Sounds like the original meaning of a 'bug in the system'.

    The story that Grace Hopper used to tell was that she was working on one of the original DoD computers when it just stopped. After going through miles of wire and vacuum tube sockets a technician found out that a spider had shorted out a socket when it tried building a web.

    Actually, Neil, it was a moth...and "bug in the system" did not originate with Grace's moth...but is often erroneously credited to that.

    We recently had an ant infestation in the bass unit of our Bose system. Seems the little buggers love electronics. A good vacuuming and some bug spray on a paper towel around it seemed to chase them off, but I had never seen that many ants in one place.

    I have heard that some ants actually are drawn to something in the electronics - either the warmth, or the buzz, or perhaps some magnectic/static field they give off.

    DOH ... I should have remembered that. I heard Grace talk in the mid-80's at a DoD conference in Norfolk. One of her quotes I took to heart: It's always easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission.

    Ummmm... Looks like one of the actual light fixtures is missing now.

    What happened? I thought all four were working the other night.
