I tried on the Homeowners section of the forum, but no responses - perhaps this one will get more responses.

I'm trying to get a recommendation for installation of a few more cable outlets in my house. This will require wall fishes, which I'm not comfortable doing. Can anyone recommend someone?

    Thanks,

    Steve

StevieD - We used OpenBand to do ours. If you are not an OpenBand customer, call Kalothia - they are local and I use them a LOT at work. Call Mark Whitehall - 571-434-9600. I'm fairly certain they will do residential work.

Openband charges a lot for such installations - $175 for a Multimedia outlet.

But my neighbor haggled and got it done cheaper with them. I was not aware we could haggle with openband...Unfortunately I paid full price.

hope you have better luck with Kalohia then we did. Miserable. Never responded when they said they would.. delayed delayed... (weeks!) never would call to say why they didn't have the response, etc. Twice we've given then an opportunity to bid on work and both times they were miserable in their responses.

Well, Kalothia turned out to be a bust - not only were they going to be a bit pricey, but they don't do any drywall repair work (so in other words, they can do the wall fishes and cable connections, and will need to cut drywall to do so, but I'd have to repair the drywall myself) - I'm really looking for a turnkey solution here.

I've tried at least one electrician (Mike Breece) - he will do the wall fishes and drywall work, but won't do the cable connections (splicing into the main line).

I must admit I'm a bit surprised and frustrated that I can't find a cable guy to do this work - you would think this is pretty standard stuff?? Anyone else have any suggestions.

Dang - sorry about Kalothia - I've had nothing but good work from them here at the center. I wonder if someone like Best Buy would have an all-in-one, or even (gasp!) Home Despot.

Well, I am trying Comcast once again. The previous guy arrived, said "I don't do wall fishes", and left. I think these guys get a fixed amount from Comcast for installations, and they cherry pick the easy ones. I called Comcast back, tried to be very clear that this would involve wall fishes, and they have scheduled someone to come out Saturday - I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I think what you are seeing is.. they get a fixed price for install.. and the individual contractors can 'sell' their services beyond that.

Any install they do from the cable company is just going to be along baseboards, straight through walls, etc. Running along a wall or inside walls they aren't going to do. Unless possibly the guy is going to go 'independant' and sell on his own

We used Adelphia (Comcast) spring of 2006 to add 2 additional outlets. I believe that they sub this out to a private contractor. Anyway he used wall fishes, got into area's of the attic that I thought were impossible, (the guy couldn't have been over 5' tall...no lie) and no drywall mess. I believe that I paid about $200.00 for this, but it was worth it to us.

OK - Comcast sent another contractor out over the weekend for the cable outlets. This guy was a winner - handled the two wall fishes without a problem (at least, no problem for me - that guy worked hard, and the attic was hot!!). Couldn't easily handle my extra family room outlet with a wall fish (lesson for those finishing basements - get all your wiring/cable outlets completed before you finish the basement) - so he had to drill to an outside wall - but managed to hide the cable under our siding all the way to the opposite side of the house where the cable comes in. I was very impressed with this guy - courteous, hard working.....so my attitude towards Comcast has changed a bit (at least I know they contract with some folks who are good at what they do!).

    Hi,

We are planning to have a new cable outlet in our family room.
We use Dish network and I am not sure if those guys do this kind of stuff.

Our family room wall where we want the new cable outlet is actually a shared wall with our neighbours and I am not sure if opening a new outlet is possible.

    Does anyone have any recommendations?

    Thanks in advance.
