Ok so this is a rant just wanted you to know ahead of time.

    Rant on.

My wife and I recently adopted a dog and we have been thrilled to have her join the family. However, during our walks I have come to realize that SOME fellow dog owners just don't pick up after their dogs!

This shows they have zero sense of respect for others or any sense of responsibility for their dogs.

What pisses me off even more is that I find piles of fresh dog mess within arms reach of the wonderful community provided doggy-mess bags and trash cans! How hard is it to reach down and pick up the mess people?!

Not only does this show a lack of respect for the community it is also disgusting and can be a health hazard for other dogs (some germs and parasites are passed on through dog feces).

On top of all that, I can't even walk my dog at night without fear of stepping on another dogs mess.

This seems to be a big problem on Village Drive and Feidlthorn. I'm tempted to stand at the exit of Southern walk with a big sign reminding owners to pick up after their own dogs.

What can we do to help combat this and make sure our common areas are kept clean and safe for walking?

    Rant over.

we need to find out who these people are and send the recently captured "pool bandit" teens over to their house to fling poo. Call it a "community service" project

My wife and I have noticed this as well. We look around like we are the only ones cleaning up the "doggie treats". On one hand we want to pick up after other people to make the nieghborhood as nice as possible, but on the other hand we feel that if we keep cleaning up after irresponsible people it will only reinforce to them that they can do what they want.

I do not know what the HOA or anyone can do since they already provide bags and trash receptacles.

And speaking of the trash sometimes when we walk the path off of village drive towards the southern walk plaza it looks like we are in the ghetto with all trash and McDonalds wrappers strewn accros the woods. We pick up as much as we can and more than once I have had to run to the doggie bag station to get a bag after our dogs drops a land mine and we have forgotten a bag.

Getting this area clean is going to be a lot like taking care of a puupy, you can only hope to catch people in the act before you can correct the actions. I do not have any problems telling someone to clean up their dogs doo when I see them drop it, but then again I am a 6 foot 6 200 and some odd pound Army Veteran.

And today I found two more spots where a dog owner allowed their animal to do their business ON THE SIDEWALK!! Look at the corner of Village and 'Cross Winds (I think that is the name, opposite side of the general park) And again on the sidewalk of Fieldthorn and Sunderleigh.

I mean, c'mon people this is on the sidewalk in plain site!!!

This is an ongoing complaint....just like the reckless drivers in NOVA, people sometimes feel rules do not apply to them. We dog owners as well and always pick up after our dog, however, we always see dog poop not picked up along our walks.....even on the sidewalk. It's bad...there's no excuse, but people still do it.

Been living in Ashburn for 15 years and this has been an ongoing complaint. Is there really anything that can be done to stop this other than quaint newletter poems, reminders, and doggie bags?

Although, I have to say that everyone I've seen in Broadlands walking their dog (and their dog's doing its business) has at least had the bag at the ready!

NOPE. short of catching someone and publicly stoning them, i say nothing else can be done. inconsiderate people are just that- and nothing short of a taste of their own bad behavior or being fined for "littering" would make a difference, and even THAT may not work. even my 8 year old son cleans up when he walks our dog- once he even came back to the house to get a second bag when our puppy made a 2nd surprise pile!

it's just another example anti social behavior that crappy (no pun intended!) people exhibit, up there with flicking cigarette butts in someone else's yard or while driving, littering...simply leaving something inconvenient for someone else to deal with. can't stand it but it's everywhere, not just on the 'hood...

That's what I figured. I'm assuming they either don't read these posts or just don't care. Either that or they just don't have the common sense to understand they don't live on some farm out in the middle nowhere. I honestly think some folks just don't get there are other people living in the same community that may not want their stuff in their yard.

People just dont care. I think someone earlier called them "self proclaimed alpha residents". People feel like they should be able to do whatever they want. I think it is pretty common in this area.

it's common EVERYWHERE. re-read Dr. Seuss's Star Bellied Sneeches story- we've learned this about human nature since kindergarten!

someone will always think they are better and more entitled thatn someone else for some reason...

Maybe I should have said "it is more common in this area." Also by this area I mean the DC metro and DC burbs area.

I just want to add to the tally.

This morning (630am) I walked my dog down Village and saw two poops ON THE SIDEWALK. Ridiculous.

I then walked down Claiborne and saw at least four poop piles along the path in the grass.

I then walked down the path in the woods and saw at least four poop piles along the bike path.

COME ON PEOPLE, PICK UP YOUR POOP!

It's bad enough they leave the poop in the common area, but what really infuriates me is the poop on the sidewalk!!!! Neither is acceptable.....and there should be no excuse especially with all the stands available with the poop bags........

So I called the HOA today and explained the situation and how bad it has gotten.

On my walk this morning there was MORE poop out on the side walk only 2 blocks from the pool, on Village. In plain site, just sitting there. Disgusting.

I found fresh poop areas all along the common areas and sidewalk grass and piles of more mess in the common area back off Feildthorn.

It has gotten to a point now where you cannot walk 100 feet without seeing a pile of dog mess. There is no comfort in walking around on the sidewalks, let alone the grass now.

I've asked the HOA what can be done about educating our residents on this problem and if a fine can be enforced for those not responsible enough to pick up their dogs mess.

I'll keep you posted as to what I find out.

I'm also thinking about posting signs in the worst areas asking residence to pick up their mess... though I believe this goes against HOA rules.

We do have a problem. However, I have not seen anyone leaving dog waste anywhere without picking it up. If I did, I would say something to that person. My longest walk, with canine, is in the morning. Unless one believes that morning walkers are different, we are dealing with a minority. The responsible dog owners can pick up after the others (other kinds of litter too). Who is better prepared for this than walkers with the fine plastic bags provided by the community?

With the amount of mess lying around, the minority you speak of is larger then you might think.

However, I'm sure it is a small group of the same dogs, since I can tell that the size of the mess seams to be consistant in areas, leading me to believe 1-2 dogs are the culprits in each area.

However, this doesn't mean that the responsible homeowners should clean up after them, just because. This does nothing to cure the problem. If you wanted your kids to stop leaving dirty dishes in the sink, would you just keep putting them in the dishwasher for them? No, you would show teach them to clean up the dishes on their own.

The responsible few will due some extra work, but we should not be expected to be the poop police every day.
