Well, "average speed" may be a bit of a streatch. But do the speed limit on Greenway/Toll Road/Belt Way/28 and see how many times your headlights get sucked out by a passing speeder.

down 28 every weekday 9:30-10:30am. I feel like the slowest car out there when I'm going 65-70. 'Average' was probably a bit of an exaggeration... but I see at least 3-5 cars go by me at 75-80 every single day on that 10 mile stretch south and I certainly feel like I'm under the flow of traffic if I'm driving 65

That is why legislation like this should be made illegal. Speeding has been historically a loosely enforced crime, with no real clear identifiers for what is an offense, and what will be essentially ignored.

For example, on the beltway it would not be uncommon for a cop to pass someone at 70+ MPH without pulling that person over, but in southern VA that same offense would count as criminal speeding.

If the state wants to blow more of my money everywhere but NoVA, why don't they just come out and tax me, and keep stupid, random, inconsistent laws like this out of the system.

In their eyes they are taxing. But they are only taxing people who get over so many points on their driving record. But they tiptoe by calling them fees instead of fines or taxes.

Is this the same as the lottery being a tax on the poor?

funny thing- we figured that if you go about 9 miles over the speed limit the cops leave you alone- they are waiting for bigger, more profitable speeders! we tested this theory over the holiday weekend and traffic was cruising past waiting cops at 74 mph on 81 without a problem.
once out of state travelers get the memo they will probably take advantage of fact that VA govmnt targeting its own for a higher pay off...

I was always told by my parents that troopers will give you 7 mph over the limit. During my travels over the years I have asked a few troopers about this and while their "grace speed" varied, they all said what they were looking for was the person who was not going with the flow in that if everyone is going 10 over, no one would probably get pulled over, but if everyone was 10 over except for one who was 15 over, that's the one that would get the ticket.

Saw a cop pulling over people on Waxpool between the Regency and Ashburn Ice Rink (that long stretch along MCI). I am very supportive of cops for the work they do, but it really irks me when they set up there. It's a 35 mph speed limit, but that's one stretch that if you aren't diligent, you can easily find yourself safely going 45-50-55mph. There are no residential areas and hardly ever any traffic there, so it bugs me that they set up there. It's one of the few roads around here where you could go 60mph and not endanger anyone.

Just wish they'd use their time to set up on Claiborne, Waxpool in Broadlands, DeMott, Broadlands Blvd or other roads where there are residences, bikes, kids, joggers and more traffic...hence, where it is actually important to reduce speeding.

Does anyone know if the individual cops themselves determine where to set up for the day or is that determined by the department itself? Just disappointing that the manpower and enforcement isn't spent on more appropriate roads.

agreed! there are so many other areas where speeding is JUST as prevalent and actually presents a DANGER to residents- this area should be lower priority. how do we go about making our opinions heard to people who could actually do something about it? i would hope that if enough residents point out a problem area that they would listen...

They're going to set up in the places that will generate the most revenue, but I doubt they'll ever admit it.
