Unfortunately, my daughter wasn't so lucky. She was killed while trying to cross a residential street, where the speed limit was 30mph. The person was seen driving very fast, but guess what?? Nothing was done to him! Even though marijuanna was found in his car. The speed limit WAS reduced to 25mph after that and there was talk of speed bumps, but that didn't happen.

There will always be a problem with people speeding in residential areas, sadly. I'm always on the lookout for children, and it does scare me when I see little ones on the side of the road.

Both the Sheriff's dept. and the fire dept. have said "no" to speedbumps countywide.

VAluvr....I am so sorry for your loss. The reaction of our justice system is inexcusable. It seems it is more interested in generating revenue than protecting our children where they play.

Thank you, softballchick. I agree, about the justice system. I was very disappointed in them, and still am.

My wife volunteers at the Loudon County Animal shelter. They are a very resourcefull place. THey just had thier 40th anniversary with a "40" hour adoptathon. They got 22 cats, 4 dogs and a few hamsters and such adopted.

Here is the link to the shelter.

VAluvr, so sorry to hear about your daughter - it's horrible and that driver should have paid. My condolences to you and your family.

FYI - according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_limits_in_United_States), there are at least 9 states where residential speed limits are 30 mph (OK, not a HUGE difference...)

I think it was a rhetorical question. 25mph is too fast when small children are nearby, and certainly 30mph is ridiculous considering most people go over the posted speed anyway so yes, it's a huge difference.

And, if the county says no to speed bumps then they should step up the patrols or reconfigure the road where drivers are forced to slow down.

I often wonder why anyone has to have this discussion. I'm still befuddled by the speed limit increase on Claiborne past the elementary school (Hillside) but the speed limit was lowered on Ashburn Farm Road and other area roads separate from residential areas and businesses.

I checked this morning on my way out and there is a speed limit sign on Demott, clearly posted, 25 mph.

I'm a volunteer at the shelter too Chsalas! What does your wife do there? I'm a cat cuddler :)

To answer any outstanding questions about how the shelter adopts out, we definitely require that the animal is spayed or neutered before they are taken home. We have "Pets to Vets" drivers that transport those animals to the partner vet of your choice. This ensures the animal makes it to the vet and has the operation. The adoption fee includes the spay/neuter operation. You are right that we don't have the capability to perform the procedure at the shelter. We give the basic vaccines, but anything too complicated, we use a vet.

I agree that the animal population is a huge problem and gets worse every day. Maybe we can begin our own TNR operation for Broadlands/Ashburn to ensure the animals who are in need of care in our neighborhoods are not forgotten. I'll ask at the shelter what resources they recommend to help us with the endeavor. Who's with me? :)
