I wonder how much worse the merge onto 28 off of the Greenway will get when the light goes away???

The 28S / Airport merge? That should be one of things "fixed" in the airport mixing bowl, or at least I thought that was what they were doing. I would avoid the Greenway to 28S any way. If nothing else, save yourself about 15 minutes, and get off at Old Ox. At least then you can left lane past the Greenway/28S/Airport mess with relative ease. Of if you leave close to 7AM, Waxpool really isn't that bad (compared to Greenway backup).

Just remember when getting off at Old Ox, when you make the left after the toll, you have you own lane on the other side, so no need to watch for traffic coming on the right. Once they get the High Speed (or crawl speed in NoVA) merge in it should drastically reduce the overhead of using Old Ox.

    I read the washingtonpost blog...
Yeah, why shut down the intersection early and give thousands of people traffic relief, when you can keep 10 people happy...

The merge at 28 and the Greenway has been pretty lovely since school has let out (wife takes it every workday) but as of this morning the backup to merge onto 28 was PAST the toll plaza at 0800 and for a long while afterwards.

Oh, the Innovation Ave intersection was closed and the light removed yesterday. I hope it gets significantly better but the CONSTANT traffice coming down 28 now will make it much more difficult to merge.

With the merge onto 28 now going to take 10-15 minutes just FROM the toll plaza, I wonder how many people will decide to spend that wait on Waxpool for free???

I don't get it, wouldn't removing the light make traffic flow more free? I haven't driven it yet in rush hour but it seems to me it should have made it much better. No?

The theory is the constant flow of traffic leaves less holes.. making it harder for the traffic trying to merge.. to find room to merge. So cars stop.. making merging even harder.. and the whole process compounds.

It would "IF" everyone coming around from south on 28 would get over in the two left lanes and leave the right lane open for toll road traffic moving in. Unfortunately I see it eveyday - people ride the right leaving no way to easily get onto 28 North.

All those ppl in the right lane are trying to get to the Toll Road - that whole strech is a giant CF.

Yesterday traffic there was horrible - but it was due to an accident that was sitting (with a cop) on the narrow shoulder on the left side just past the Greenway dump off and just before Dulles. Everyone was stopping to stare at the fender bender.

    Want to see a CF?

Be there when they close rt 28 to one lane before innovation... have 3 roads converging there (2 onramps and 28 N).. and they still don't turn off the traffic light or manually direct traffic.

Monday night it was a PARKING lot. It took 30mins for me to just get to the exit ramp to the Greenway so I could bail off 28N

But the problem is that a significant number of cars on 28 south need to get over to go to the airport and a HUGE number of cars do not want to wait until the last second to get into the exit lane for the toll road.

I know space is/was limited in what could have been done but it is a poor design to have a busy merge and a busy exit(s) so close together.

Yeah, I have to admit, the removal of the innovation ave light has left me less than impressed. I forget which day of the week it was, but I was sitting in gridlock from innovation all the way to waxpool, and it seemed that the flyover was the only reason people were bunching up.

I've got a feeling that until there is additional east-west egress to Ashburn there is going to be backups.

There was an accident right at the entrance to the flyover on Wednesday around 5:30pm. That led to quite a backup.

Ahhhh, excellent engineering + Ashburn type A's. Surprised it doesn't happen daily at that interchange. I've almost made it a habit to take the second exit onto Waxpool to avoid all the grousing, but then I usually get "attacked" by everyone coming into the left lanes to head south on LCP, but usually I can navigate through that.

My comment was on going HOME (ie getting off Toll Road and onto Rt 28 North) not going in the morning.

I agree the morning commute is crap thanks to the dumping of the Greenway onto 28 South before the airport exit and toll road exit.

Well, at 6:30pm tonight, traffic was flowing very smoothly from the Toll Road onto 28 North. There was no backup at all.

Fridays's during the summer are usually lighter than Mon-Thu. Lots of people are off for the day or take off early.

Let's see how the next couple of weeks go and then wait for the true test when school starts up.

Don't forget they're still building an interchange there. Expect a few months of lane closures, restrictions, etc. before it is finally done.
