I am supposed to go to Mexico over Labor Day.

I just found out you need a passport to get there and back now.

My old passport is lost and out of date by several years.

Anyone have any information on how to get one quickly?

Also where do get get a passport around here?

Can you renew one that is out of date and lost?

I tried calling and there is a endless wait!!!!

    Thanks

You can do expidited stuff.. just costs more.
The post offices (specific ones) do paperwork handling on passports.
Last resort, but the quickest and most expensive, is going into DC and getting it done there.

I think the expidited model is only like 2 weeks, you can do that via mail and the post office.

First off contact the passport office by phone. They have been extending deadlines on this passport issue for a while. So they may still let you go anf come back. If not there are plenty of places that will expedite your passport, but be prepared to pay.

Yeah but I just saw a report the other day where even the expedited is taking something like 8 weeks because of all the back log. I would see if you can get an appointment in DC to get one.
I thought that congress just passed some kind of reprieve until the end of the year and as long as you can prove you have applied for a passport and have other forms of id you can still go on planned trips to Canada and Mexico and few other Caribbean areas

Lee, good luck, because you are going to need it!

As far as the necessity of a passport being waived if you show proof of application, that was only for people who applied prior to May 31, 2007 and had not yet recieved their passports. Anyone applying after that MUST have a valid passport when traveling outside of the US and its territories.

Even expedited passport applications are taking well over a month to complete. You must have an appointment to make application at the passport agency. Even if you get an appointment in the next 30 days, expect a loooooooooooong wait. Also know, that once you are in line, all food and drinks are prohibited. (that may seem insignificant now, just wait until you have been in line for 5 hours!)

Since your passport has expired, it will take longer to process than a straight up renewel.

To everyone reading this, if you do not have a passport, apply for one as soon as possible, because you never know when you are going to need it. Too many people think that traveling with their birth certificate is good. Actually, it is one of the dumbest things you can do, especially if you don't have a passport. If your your birth certificate is stolen, you can guarantee that there will be someone using it within 24 hours.

If your passport is up for renewel or your pages are filling up with stamps, take care of it ASAP. Also know, many countries will not allow entry if your passport expires within 90 days.

We just got our renewal passports in the last couple of days. It took over 4 months with routine processing. Hopefully it is getting better, but I would think you would need expedited processing.

BTW: you can renew your passports if your previous one isn't over 15 years old.

    Best regards,
    Richard

My wife & I had our long-expired passports renewed at the beginning of May and they took 13 days using expedited processing. But your "mileage" will vary...

I got a new pssport last fall, used it once and it ended up in the wash accidently. It still seems fine, the cover is a little frayed. How bad does the condition of a passport need to be before they on't accept it? Any standards?
