so, several months ago I bought myself a guitar, intending to learn how to play it. I have muddled about it a little bit, but would like to take some lessons. Any recommendations for good places or people to get lessons from? It's a nice guitar, approved of by my dad and his wife who are avid players of guitars and other stringed instruments, so I'd hate for it to just sit and do nothing.

    Thanks!

    Acoustic or electric?

And are you into self-taught or do you want a real person?

This reminds me of one very late night I couldn't stand it anymore and bought the Estaban Guitar from one of those shopping channels. Anyway I forgot I ordered it and it came just when Dalyn was home. Dalyn says what is that? I say it is nothing dear. She says open the package nowwwww!!!!!

Ok dear. She responds what the ***** did you buy a guitar for you don't even play you can't still play drums after 25 years and now a guitar??? Are you crazy. Dalyn it will look beautiful in the living room it even comes with it's own stand:D See it even comes with an amp and instructional DVD's this is going to be great I will be playing the guitar in no time.

Well that has been over a year and I have still not opened the instructional tapes. But it sure gets alot of attention and people say I didn't know you play guitar???? Dalyn responds before me and tells them Lee has never even touched it since he put it there and it is for sale or even free just to get it out of here. So far I have been lucky no takers yet:D

It is an acoustical guitar that can be hooked to the amp it comes with. Esteban does a segment on one of the shopping channels every now and then which he has done for years.

Even though Dalyn would say it is for sale or even free, I will never part with my Guitar that I can't play as of yet.

Actually my brother-law who is an accomplished guitar player says it is a very good guitar for the money, he actually likes to play it. I do have a rock star friend who is coming to visit me for a few days next month and we will see what he has to say. If only my neighbors would know who some of the people that visit me on occasion that arrive in the middle of the night are. ha ha ha ha ha

Now back to the real world of finishing my new deck that we will never use except for the grill and the band that is going to play for Dalyns surprise birthday party next month. And it is not even her birthday ha ha ha

Don't worry, Dalyn never never goes on these forums and that is true.:)

    Acoustic-electric. :D (I guess that's really acoustic.)

I dig self-taught and have some DVDs recommended by my dad and stepmom, but I think a real human might be able to help me get things the books and DVDs just can't convey. So, a real person, for a few lessons just to get started.

I tried to start playing guitar about 10 years ago. Tried to teach myself how to do it with the instructional VHS tapes that I got from Melody Music.

I'm just as good today as I was two weeks into it.

I think that for very few people on Earth, playing a guitar might come naturally, but for the rest of us schmucks, we need lessons with a real teacher.

Ah, OK, then I'm not of much help. However, I know the guy who does this site: Guitar Consultant.

It's good stuff but more towards the "Shredder Style."

My son gets lessons from Kurt at Minton's Music across from MCI. Very reasonable rates, but above all, he loves going to his lessons--which is rare for a 14-year-old!

What are the rates per lesson?

Does it vary according to skill-level?

I'd be interested in the rate also. I took lessons about 9 years ago (for about 6 months) and then tried learning on my own. Having a person teach you is the only way to go.

$25 per 30 minute lesson--the best part is that my son gets excited to go, always comes out having learned some new riff, and he's practicing without us having to ask :)

Kurt is a really good teacher, especially if you like the following music.

    Rock
    Classic Rock
    Metal
    Punk Rock

Anything like that he is great at teaching.

I took a course through fairfax country rec center. Check their website or do a google for "Fairfax Country Virginia Parktake". I think the cost was $80 for something like 10 classes.
