It looks like I have Groundhog living under my shed. Can anyone recommend a safe and humane to remove this little guy? He's really cute, but he's munching on everything.

    Mike

edit: This groundhog eradication / relocation method must not be for harmful to dogs.

Had one under our porch in early Spring - tried several methods including ammonia soaked rags, Critter Ridder (sold at Home Depot), moth balls...but no luck. Also found out from LoCo Animal Control that it is illegal to set your own trap/transport nuisance wildlife.

Ended up calling a company called Critter Control 703-787-6909. They came and set up a trap with cabbage and an apple.
Less than 10 minutes after he set the trap and left our house, the groundhog went inside the trap and the door closed. He was unharmed and was just sitting in there. We called them and they came right back to pick him up.
We were told they were going to take him out to Clarke County? and release him?

Concerned that other groundhogs/critters/bugs might find a home in there, he left another trap out for a few days in case there were others but he seemed to be the only one so we filled the hole with lava stones and dirt and trimmed all shrubs around the area. So far so good and no other critters.

I think service included a 90 day guarantee in case there was a "family" but we did not need to call them back. (yet!)

Unfortunately, it was not cheap but it was living right under our front porch (and that is where we suspect he hibernated all winter) and we feared that it might undermine the porch structure? or allow rainwater to seep into our foundation/basement with all the holes it was digging so close to the house/porch and though apparently harmless, we just did not want the thing so close to our front door/porch while we (and our kids) were out there.

You might want to give the less $ methods (above) a try first since it is under your shed which might be a less worrisome location?

    Good Luck.

When we lived in PA we had a family of groundhogs living under our shed. It wasn't long before a family of foxes moved in and took over (and getting rid of the groundhogs). I used ammonia soaked rags and a long pole to shove them under to get rid of the foxes. The ammonia rags also work well for bears in your garbage (in case you have that issue as well) :)

We used Critter Control once in the past also. They are very professional.

We're gonna try some of the methods recommended by VDB. and if that doesn't work, we'll call the professionals.

Groundhogs are not a common carrier of rabies, are they?
