I wanted to check-in with everyone on Case Design. I want everyone to know that we just worked with Case Design to remodel our kitchen and family room and couldn’t be more disgusted!

While the work started out great and our “consultant” / “smarmy salesperson” started off very well. Everyone showed up, worked on the project and celebrated in our spending way too much money. Then things turned ugly. The guy (Consultant Bob Black) had a number of personal things going on and didn’t have time to return calls, follow up on commitments or do anything but try and change the subject when nailed for bad/horrible customer service.

Case said that they would be done in about two weeks – that was until they scheduled our worker (who was great by the way) to work on different jobs. Case’s commitment to our remodel worked out to be something like a few days a month and they would only show up if you called and complained. I think the two weeks job ran about 4 months.

They over charged or as they put it – under estimated - and under delivered. Granted they do good work but the pain just isn’t worth it.

Final and last straw! Apparently it was their last visit and when getting home on a Friday before heading off to dinner – reservations @ 6:00 – I noticed that the lock box was open with no key to be found. No key anywhere. So who has the key? I ran to Home Depot to buy a new lock and replaced it just in time get take a shower and get to dinner. We called the project manager and he got back to us about 4 days later. Said our worker guy has the key. Been two weeks and we still don’t have the key back. No apologies from the project manager - business as usual.

Basically, Case Design is overpriced, unreliable, painful to work with and I wouldn’t recommend them to someone I dislike tremendously. Stay away, run as a matter of fact. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Too many stories to tell.

I remember reading a horror story of a review about Case a few years ago, and I believe the complaints were similar to yours. Guess they haven't made the effort to improve; sorry that you had to go through that.

Thank goodness we didn't go with them. They were one of a number of bids we got for putting a floor in our two story family room to make two seperate rooms. I saw Hermann Johnson, who seemed pretty knowledgeable, but gave me the most generic bid.

I ultimately decided to go with Moss Construction who I've had great references from. They also laid out exactly what I get for the money and highlighted some potential roadblocks that would cost a little more, but here again, they laid out exactly they would cost. Work starts in February (hopefully).

i called them to get a quote for a deck....and when i explained i was in a townhouse and needed a 26X12 decked on the 2nd level...they guy told me---and i quote: "sir, most of our projects average in cost around $30-40 thousand dollars. It doesn't sound like we're up your alley." A simple, No would've worked. Over the phone---he doesn't know what i can and can't afford. All i was trying to do was get a quote for a freakin' deck----if you don't want to work on the lowly middle-class townhome homeowner....put it on the side of your truck!

That reminds of the other reason we didn't go with them and that is because he said we were a "filler job" because he expected it would only last 3 weeks or so. I definitely didn't like that.

Gee, VoiceGuY 07, we should get together.
Your experience mirrors our experiences with Case. NEVER EVER EVER call Case for anything. They are unethical and unprofessional. Salesman promised everything in the book to get us to sign. Stay away from Tom Dodd and Michael Crum. They work their employees like dogs. The individuals that came into our home to complete the work were fantastic, hardworking craftsmen. The problem was that they were overbooked. If you have a job that is under $50,000, you get bumped to the back of the line. A little bit of work done here and there after 3 or 4 p.m on random days. I would arrive home from work and the workman would be showing up from other jobs.

Repeated Threats, lies, intimidation, "meetings" to discuss issues instead of action.
Exorbitant prices for supposed master plumbers and electricians. Our newly installed sinks are leaking for the fourth time, the electrician installed the 3 inch recessed lights he had in his truck instead of the six inch lights the plans called for.

I wholeheartedly agree RUN as fast as you can AWAY FROM CASE.

Mark Richardson, Case Design president, has a monthly column in Remodeling magazine, frequently focuses on customer service.
The Case Philosophy is peace of mind in your home; customer service is no. 1 priority. NOPE - the dollar is!

After reading the other posts, had to chime in to let you know a few years ago when we called Case they told us over the phone (without even coming out) that their minimum for a job we were talking about with our basement was $40k. Ended up the 3 other contractors were in the mid-upper $20s.

We were amazed and have never considered them again for anything.

    Update -
Case Design Corporate Offices refuses to respond to County Consumer Agencies when they receive a complaint from homeowners. They direct phone calls to the jobsite employee and have him send a terse, typed response with no letterhead, heading or signature.

Need to warn all your friends/family/co-workers via email to not use this company. Have them pass it on also.

STAY AWAY FROM THESE INDIVIDUALS AND THEIR SUBS.

I've learned the hard way that the BBB is ineffective/useless... Keep in mind who pays dues to the BBB, and thus, who their true 'customers' are.

Doesn't the VA Attorney Generals office have a consumer affairs division? That might be the way to go-we had to go that route with a company in New York.

They were reported to the local consumer agencies which are usually more successful than the BBB. However, Case has learned that it is better to say nothing than to respond when the evidence - voice recordings, emails, written documents, photos is already stacked against them. Litigation is the only option now - they delayed; they damaged brand new sinks;counter tops; left holes in the ceilings; the plumbing leaks; etc.

A couple of years ago, Dateline or 20/20 did a expose on shoddy contractors. Case Design was featured for taking an elderly woman for $$$$ for a project worth less in materials and then the work was completely inferior - something like that.
