I was wondering if anyone had to take their child to an ENT to get tubes and if so did you like the doctor you saw? I just got back from taking my 16 month to Dr. Lisa Fox in Sterling. Also looking for opinions on having the tube surgery done. Anyone wish they had not done the surgery?

    Thanks
    Suzanne

Dr. Andrew Silva - he's in Lansdowne, 703-858-4439. I love that man. He saved my son's life when he ended up with a strep infection that turned septic. Our son had two abscesses in his neck that were pushing on his carotid artery and his windpipe. Dr. Silva chose to treat first with medication before surgery. Thankfully the medication worked. He was in the hospital for almost a week.

Unfortunately he's not in our current insurance plan, but because of his bedside manner and professionalism we took our youngest to him to have ear tubes put in place. Our youngest had almost 12 ear infections in about a year. The tubes were put in and the infections stopped. We had follow-up visits and he's doing terrific.

Dr. Silva also went above and beyond his normal dr. role to call our insurance company on our behalf for our first son. Remember I said he wasn't in our plan, but because he was the on-call emergency ENT he was the only one available to treat our son. So, he called our insurance company to explain what happened and our insurance ended up paying for his services for that son. The son with ear tubes - we paid a discounted rate because we paid cash. He was very helpful setting us up with a payment plan as well.

I used the following otolaryngologist in '06:
    Dr. Edward D. Marion
***specialty in pediatrics & voted Top 100 Drs in Washingtonian.
Ear, Nose & Throat Spec. of No. Va., PC
    6231 Leesburg Pike, Phone: 703-536-2729

and my hubby used Dr Iqbal in '05

Dr Iqbal of Loudoun ENT Associates
    46440 Benedict Drive, Phone: 703-444-9660

Dr. Iqbal was "ok" but I felt Dr Marion has a much better bedside manner. Also as mentioned Dr. Marion specializes in peds.

Our daughter had tubes at 15 months. Her ENT is Dr. Gregory Milmoe at Georgetown. (We were living in Arlington at the time; though we still see him.) He's absolutely wonderful and took a conservative approach. He first saw her when she was about 13 months old and recommended a conservative approach of testing her hearing and watching. At that point, she'd had fluid in both her ears for more than 6 months. She basically had an ear infection every other week from 4 months of age until she got tubes. However, he indicated that if she were to get another ear infection during the summer (which is not during cold/flu season) that she would have to have the surgery. Guess what, she developed another ear infection.

He's performed two surgeries on her (the second was to remove a tube that did not fall out). Both surgeries were performed at Georgetown, which has a wonderful pediatric preop/recovery room; in fact, one of the nurses was there for both her first (2002) and second surgery (2006).

We just saw Dr. Milmoe about DD's tonsils in November and need to schedule a follow-up. His bedside manner is wonderful and he's a top-notch surgeon.

Our little guy had the tubes put in 3 weeks ago after, like the others here, pretty much constant infections from 4 months of age. We tried to wait and the pediatrician hoped this season would be better than last but after we spent a solid 2.5 months on strong antibiotics and could not clear the fluid or infection it was time. We heard great things about Dr. Silva but he isn't in our insurance so we went with another strong recomendation - Dr. Karen Hermansen in Herndon on Elden St. She did the actual procedure in Fairfax. I have been thrilled with her since the very first appointment. Great bedside manner, took lots of time to explain things to us and really made the process as painless as it can be.

We already notice a big difference in our son's behavior. He was active and speaking well before but now - WOW. Once in a while I secretly wish he was a bit more tame like before when he didn't feel well!! :) Not really, it just makes me glad we did this because we can tell how much better he is feeling.

The person I saw today, Dr. Fox, is Dr. Vasquez partner I believe. Did you ever see Dr. Fox?

We used Dr. McBride, and Dr. Bahadori is also an option (same practice). They were repeatedly recommended to me by several different physicians. Dr. McBride was great, and I heard good things about Bahadori as well. They have offices in Reston, Centreville, and Fairfax. However, there is typically a significant wait to see either of them.

Dr. Bahadori is great. Along with Dr. Doyle. Both are or were with Dr. McBride. The tubes make a huge difference if you kids have chronic ear infections. Tonsil and adnoid removal also were done by Dr. Bahadori. He has a great bedside manner.

Ditto on Dr. Bahadori. He was great. Had tubes put in for my daughter at 7 months, then another set the following year. His bedside manner was really good, and explained everything well. Our daughter really liked him and was comfortable with him.

Hi, you may want to have your child tested for Auditory Processing Disorder. They test for this at Blue Ridge Speech and hearing. Dr. Owens is AWESOME with Children. My son has this disorder. Basically, all hearing levels are perfect. However, his wiring is all messed up and he doesn't understand what people are saying to him. It is extremely frustrating for little ones.

Here are two great sites. http://www.ldonline.org/article/8056
and http://qw88nb88.wordpress.com/living-with-auditory-processing-disorder/. The second is an eye opening piece written by an adult with APD.

My son is now 9, and once he was diagnosed, it made a lot of things make sense to his issues. We used to think he was ignoring us, now we know better.

    Good Luck!

You should see Dr. Richard Schwartz at Advanced Pediatrics in Vienna. He is world reknown for pioneering alternatives to tubes. He is also the clinical professor of pediatrics at Georgetown. Washingtonian Magazines perennial Best of for Pediatrics.
