I know there are other threads in the archives about this, but I specifically need to find a new OB/GYN who is very experienced in high-risk pregnancy. I know I will have to have a c-section, as well as have another health condition meticulously monitored. I need someone who will communicate with my endocrinologist about my health condition. If you recommend a doctor or a practice of docs who has served you well under similar circumstances, please let me know. Evening hours are a bonus too, but may be wishful thinking on my part. You can't have it all, right?
    Thanks so much.

My issues were different than yours, but I saw Drs. Khoury and Nies at Perinatal Associates of Northern Virginia for all of my pregnancies. No evening hours (at least they didn't have them when I was there) and they are in Fairfax, but I can't say enough good things about them. I lived in Fairfax County when I had my babies, but I'd go back to them if I were to have another one - even though it would be inconvenient. But there may be a terrific perinatologist in Loudoun that I don't know of.

I was going to recommend Dr. Khoury as well - my good friend delivered three healthy boys with him - despite her medical issues. She really liked him a lot.

I sent you a pm about perinatal associates also. I was happy with them for 2 pregnancies.

I had to see Dr. Khoury at Perinatal Associates of Northern Virginia and he was very insensitive to my situation. I would not go back! He told me "i was upset and crying for no good reason" after he told my husband and i that i tested positive two times for toxoplasmosis (in the first trimester) and that there was a chance that my baby would be born in a vegetative state, drooling over himself, for the rest of his life. And pretty much told me i had a week to decide whether i wanted to keep the pregnancy.

After a few months (and several tests later) we found out that those two tests were false positives, but he's response was before we got good the good news.

    Hi.
There seems to be a very short list here in the NoVa region for perinatologists/high-risk pregnancy doctors. When we started our odyssey in 2002, we were given three choices: Dr. Khoury, Dr. Moustafa Hassan and Dr. Rodney MacLaren at Arlington Hospital.

I'm not sure if Dr. MacLaren is still practicing.

Dr. Khoury comes highly recommended from many sources - patients and physicians. Currently one of my good friends is under his care. I have not had the pleasure of meeting him and his colleagues, but you would have the convenience of delivering in Fairfax Hospital. It is a top notch facility.

We were under the care of Dr.s Hassan, Maghak and Elkousy. Their practice is known as Maternal Fetal Medicine of the Mid-Atlantic (MFMMA). They have a clinic in Sterling near the plaza with Target/Michaels/BAMM/Toys 'R Us. Their main base of operations is in Silver Spring, MD. They also have a special Perinatal Clinic at Holy Cross Hospital. They are affiliated with Inova Loudoun, Reston Hospital and Holy Cross. Website: http://highriskspecialist.com/index.htm

Firstly I want you to consider that my pregnancy was considered high-risk even before conception. From Day 1, I was under care of Dr. Hassan and his team with in-office sonograms, blood tests, etc. They made every effort to ensure our comfort and well-being, and were quite concerned and involved in my case. Because of my experience with them, we would certainly go back to them should we be blessed with another pregnancy.

Now...some things you need to know. When you go to his clinic in Sterling, it's a very HUMBLE office. It will not have the same spit and polish that some of the other doctors offices seem to have around here. Do not let that put you off.

My first consult with Dr. Hassan, I have to admit, I wasn't too keen about him and at the time he didn't seem to interested in me and my case...but then I wasn't pregnant at the time and all expectations were purely hypothetical.

When we returned for a second consult, he was quite involved and truly was engaging quickly in our care.

Dr. Hassan and colleagues do ALL their surgeries at Holy Cross. They want to be on site with a Level 3 NICU in case there are any complications. Now, many people balk at the idea of deliverinng in Silver Spring, MD because of the distance. Yes...it is a drag. But the nurses and staff were awesome. I spent 3 full weeks in that hospital and felt well cared for.

If you want to talk more about our experience, PM me and we can hook up.

All the best to you, and congratulations on the baby.

Dr.Richard Stokes in Reston. There are 2 Dr.Stokes - the one I am talking about is RICHARD Stokes (not Chauncy in Lansdowne). He is an interesting person, to say the least, but he is extremely experienced in high-risk pregnancies and sits down IN HIS OFFICE with you after every visit to talk about everything. I have NEVER been to ANY other doctor that does that. Sorry to use so many caps but I just have to! He is very conservative about the pregnancy and puts things in perfect perspective. I don't think he has Saturday hours but I am not sure. The wait times in his office can be long- but that is the case with any ob- if someone's having a baby you just have to wait! Good luck with everything!

I just wanted to add a few things about Dr. Hassan. I went to see him for a routine ultrasound when pregnant with my now 17 month old son. Dr. Hassan found something on the u/s that wasn't "normal" with the baby. He spoke to us very calmly and gave different scenarios and then referred us to Children's Hospital where I had 2 different fetal MRI's to help further figure out what was wrong. He personally made the phone call to Children's and got us "in the door" so to speak. I was followed closely by Dr. Hassan as well as my regular OB. Because Dr. Hassan was so thorough in reading that first ultrasound, we were able to get immediate care for our son and have an amazing team of doctors at Children's Hospital as well as our local pediatrician. I give him LOTS of credit.

Sure, his office is fairly small and sometimes the waits were longer than normal but he knows his stuff and is worth it. I mainly saw Hassan but on one visit I saw Dr. Elkousy and was equally impressed.

    Best of luck to you.

Dr. MacLaren does still practice at Virginia Hospital Center (the old Arlington Hospital) and I highly recommend him. I've seen him for all three of my pregnancies and feel very comfortable/confident in his care.

I saw Dr. Hassan during my 2nd pregnancy and found him to be thorough, patient and very knowledgeable. He spent as much time as needed to answer my questions, do sonos, and explain whatever needed to be explained. He was also accesible when I called his office or he returned calls quickly. I saw both other docs on occasion and liked them also.

Please pm if you'd like more info.

Thank you for all of these wonderful replies. I need to clarify a couple of things from my original post. Firstly, I am not pregnant yet, but planning to be soon. Secondly, I am not in need of a perinatologist initially. The risks I am experiencing are to me, and potentially to the baby, although in my two previous pregnancies, I was the one who had problems, the babies were fine. So, I'd like to start out with a regular OB/GYN, but someone who is very experienced in dealing with high-risk pregnancy and would not hesitate to refer me to a perinatologist should I need one. And also someone who will communicate with my other doctors about my medical condition, as I may require medications or more frequent checking of blood levels, etc.
Thanks again for all of the info. I really appreciate you all sharing your experiences with me.

I just wanted to let you know that I saw Dr. McLearan at Arlington during my first pregnancy while I was under the care of a regual OB/GYN. They worked with him but they had issues communicating with my hemotoligist which is why I switched to perinantal assocates for my 2nd and 3rd pregnancies.

I had a blood condition that needed to be monitored. It was more of a precaution then a true risk for me but, I felt better having doctors that would communicate with my hemotoligist and he was the one who recommended the practice to me.

I would suggest asking your other dotors who they would recommend. They may have a relationship with a practice so that communication will be good.

Good luck with everything. I wish you the best.
