My wife informs me that Ms. Utility is marking up OVERLAND PARK today. She asked, and they said that it was for the installation of FIBER. FIOS HERE WE COME!

They are digging WWI style trenches in my yard this morning. Looks like a good deal of work will be done in the Overland Park area over the next few days.

I think whoever is the @sshat in charge of the Broadlands Blvd/Shellhorn/Faulkener Pwky fiasco is probably overseeing this project too. Any idea when FIOS will come live? I bet if we contacted Vegas, we could get some odds on which project will be finished 1st.

    What say you?

    Verizon Fios
    vs.
    Broadlands Blvd completion

(My vote is the FIOS in 2010)

what can I expect from the digging/laying fiber operation in my yard? Did they adequately repair the lawn? Any damage to driveways? Most importantly, are there nasty above ground or large underground (w/ cover) utility boxes???

    Only observing from a far...

the boxes are underground... with approx 2'x3' covers on them spread every so often down the line they are digging.

They appear to be leaving approx 8"x 4' disturbed surfaces with about 3-4' between each disturbance.

    Driveways, etc they push under.

Wish I could agree with you...but...

I am a corner house and they tore a 2 foot trench through 80% of my property. I also got the bonus of a 2'x3' green utility box at the corner of my yard. They did a good of a job as they could of with replacing the hunks of grass, but there is dirt exposed as well. I should get a free year of FIOS for this!!

    Couple of questions:
-Were they required as part of the agreement with the county to inform each resident of the work they were planning to do on the resident's property?
-Is it true that the digging they are doing now is just for the infrastructure and that once they light the fiber and people start signing up, they will need to come back on your property and dig again to run the fiber to your home?
-Has anybody in Broadlands actually signed up and are using FIOS yet?
-Do we have any indication on when they hope to finish Broadlands?

Yes - A note should have been left on each resident's front door.
Yes - Once you sign up for FiOS, they run the fiber from the box to your home.
No - None of the FiOS fiber within Broadlands is lit, as far as I have been informed.
No, but from looking at other developments, the best guess is sometime late summer.

So if nobody in our neighborhood ever received any type of notice about them digging up our yards, do you happen to know which county department would be the appropriate office to notify?

I don't know that there is any requirement to notify you. They are working in the utility easement that the utilities have the right to work in.

I believe that they are not 'required' to inform you that they will be "digging up your yard". In most cases they do so as a courtesy. They have the rights to the easement and as such, can dig in that easement to their hearts content, as long as they return the area as close as possible to its original condition, ie grass, etc.

I could very well be wrong about the 'notification' requirement, but if that were true, then they would probably have to send everyone a registered letter to satisfy that requirement, which I have never heard being done before.

Now, if you have an issue with the work done and how the area that was dug up looks like, I think I have someone you can contact at Verizon. The HOA Board was recently sent a 'generic' letter stating that Verizon was rolling out FiOS within our area, etc. At the end of the letter, there was a blurb about if you had questions, issues or concerns to call the Verizon Customer Advocacy Group at 888-250-9710 between 8am-4pm or email them at mycustomeradvocate@verizon.com

For information specific to the Loudoun County Government, take a look at this webpage: http://www.loudoun.gov/Default.aspx?tabid=293

    Hope this helps!

The subcontractor handling the Verizon "Big Dig" is S & N Communications. The contact is Dave Gorham and the phone number is 1-540-717-2435.

All questions regarding that work can be directed to them.

    "Sometime late summer"

/Were you speaking of the dirt moving competition at the end of broadlands blvd. or the verizon project?? They both sound sooooo similar/
    (Sarcasm off);)

I'm very pleased with the way my yard was left after the digging contractors came through. For me, it wasn't a trench at all, but a few holes spaced apart that the pipes were pushed into and under. All soil was replaced and leveled out. Very pleased with their work, and welcome the telecom competition.

Do they normally dig on both sides of the street, or just one side? I ask because I have the 3' sidewalk on my property right up to the easement line. I cant see how they can dig on our side of the street without digging in a non-easement area in my yard. My sprinklers go right up to the edge of the sidewalk which is where the easement ends. If they dig in my yard, which is non-easement, Im afraid they could damage my sprinklers. Just curious.

    Both sides.

I was told by the S&N (folks doing the digging) foreman that the easement starts at the sidewalk, not the road, and goes 15 feet. VaDot has the first 9 feet and utilities the next 6. I don't know if this is true... The utility easement is not shown on the property survey from buying our new-to-us house and not online on the Loudoun GIS site either. How did you determine the utility easement on your property?

15' of easement? Im not sure I agree with that foreman. Most folks around here dont even have 15' in their front yard. I saw my easement and boundary lines on the site survey that I had to purchase separately when I bought my home. I sure hope it is correct -sure as heck better be for paying that extra money to confirm it all. I guess if they dig up lawns using shovels, they cant do any damage (fingers crossed) to the underground sprinkler lines. I've heard of other stories of FIOS contractors coming in with backhoes, just tearing everything up and leaving it, claiming that it should not have been located within the "easement", yadda yadda yadda.
Thx for the info though. I think FIOS may be one of those "bitter-sweet" deals for me. Time will tell.
