Does anyone have one of these? Are they worth the price? Is it basically an iPhone but you can't make phone calls? Is there a montly charge that you need to pay to have access to the internet? What other goods do you have on it? Would you recommend?

My 15 1/2 year old bought one and he loves it! No service fee for INTERNET use, he uses a wireless connection in the house and places like Panera that offers free WI-FI. He no longer uses the school issued agenda for homework and activities, everything is in the iTouch. I do recommend you purchase the larger GB, he is sorry he didn't spend the extra $ to have more space to hold stuff. It doesn't really cost that much more. But if you are thinking of switching your cell service you might as well have the iPhone, so everything is all in one. Good Luck:)

    iPhone vs iTouch

    iPhone
    - must buy AT&T service contract (2yrs) or hack it
    - actually a really good data plan price for AT&T
    - has both wifi (wireless LAN) and EDGE (cellular) for data

    iTouch
    - no external contracts or service required
    - basically all the same software as the iPhone, just no Phone
    - has wifi for internet (wireless LAN)
    - Apple has been charging $20 for significant software updates to iTouch users

Its virtually the same as the iPhone, just no phone, and no service contracts. But Apple is charging you for software releases.

If you just want an iPod, the iTouch is good and the new sizes really help address the main limitation of the first units but it is quite pricey.

It's a great iPod - question is do you want it to be your phone too? Unless pressed, I'd hold off on an iPhone and then simply decide if you want to spend that kind of money on an iPod.

The wifi works just like your laptop's wireless... you need a network to connect to. Some are pay, some are free. Walk into McDonalds.. free wifi.. walk into Starbucks.. pay for wifi (or free with some cards or other plans). etc etc

I have an iPhone (8GB) and I love it. Any place that has an open Wi-Fi, I can access, if not you use the Edge. Both work and it's only slow if you're trying to load a very detailed page. I'm only using about half the storgae on it right now as I am not using it as my primary iPod. I do like the fact that it has a speaker for music unlike my iPod. I don't use my phone that much, so I have the cheapest plan (450 minutes) and it is $20 a month for unlimited data download and 200 text messages. My bill is under $70 every month.

There already a ton of applications for the iPhone and Apple recently made it easier for 2nd parties to create applications. They are releasing V2.0 in June and that will make it much easier to access and download the application directly to your phone.

You can have multiple e-mail accounts on your phone as well (Yahoo, Gmail, etc...). I use one application for IMing, but AOL is creating their own application specifically for the iPhone if you're interested. The camera on the phone is pretty good and the map function comes with a real time traffic option that is surprisingly accurate.

If you have AT&T, I would recommend getting an iPhone. It was very easy for me to switch phones on line. The "sync" function with iTunes is great and simple to use.

Just get the phone. AT&T is a fine provider (except for the chick ads). HOWEVER - if you have a car with a hands free system, you might be disappointed because most systems will tell you to choose: iPhone or iPod???

I have a perfectly good phone so I'm not interested in the iPhone. I just am looking for an iPod and am thinking of the iTouch instead. Wanted to get opinions on the iTouch, but not compared to the iPhone...to an iPod. Thanks all!

    itouch - bigger
itouch - less battery for audio only
    itouch - significantly less storage
    itouch - significantly more expensive

    but

itouch does a lot more then just an ipod, primarily the wifi+internet is very valuable
if you think you'll do a lot of video, the big screen is very valuable

It boils down to money really. I like to not synch and I have a lot of music so I chose a classic over a itouch 16gig.

I have an iTouch and like it a lot. I prefer my Nano for working out at the gym (because of size), but I like the capability of more easily checking e-mail etc. with the wireless connection on the iTouch compared to using the lousy Verizon internet interface on my cell phone (I have an old Razr).

Apple charged for the major software release that added new applications such as an e-mail interface (instead of just using Safari), but some previous releases (bug fixes etc?) were free.

I have the iTouch and love it. Using 8 GB in size and only used up about half of it so far for music. No videos, videos is what will eat it up fast but they do look good on the display though. Just to clarify, there is a major upgrade release availiable that you can purchase from Apple for 20 bucks but it is optional. I have chosen not to purchase it (yet) because most of the new applications with the new software is all web based (google maps, e-mail and I think something else, only thing that is not is Notes). Now you can get to a mobile version of google maps with out purchasing software but not sure how it compares to the Apple version. I think you can purchase the product with the upgrade already but not entirely sure of that. Love the ability to scroll through my albums with a flick of the finger (similar to iTunes interface).

    Hope that helps!

My only gripe on the iTouch so far is that it is not an optimum player for driving. I like to set my iPod on shuffle when I drive, and just skip songs I don't like. On the "classic" model, this was pretty easy to do without viewing the interface, and I often did it with just one finger.

With the iTouch, the interface seems to demand more attention, which includes a quick glance to line up on the fast forward button. It's for this reason that my classic will probably not get retired, but for non-driving situations, I like the touch's song browser better.

Other than that, the iTouch is a nice "lite" laptop, for when your watching TV and want to look up something on IMDB.
