They are not directly on Claiborne though. If the driveways were directly on Claiborne I would support lowering the speedlimit, but I agree with the pp that it should remain 45mph.

There seems to be more and more dump trucks flying down the roads lately. Today, one flew down Claiborne toward the Giant, where the speed limit is 40. He had to be going over 50. And down Belmont Ridge, it's getting horrifying! Those trucks go so fast, it's an accident waiting to happen. I don't know if anything can be done about that, but I wish cops would start pulling over those trucks!!

agreed- what's the hurry?? as much as we spend on our cars, shouldn't we WANT to spend as much time as possible in them? get sirius satellite and take the long, slow way home to enjoy howard stern or a fave song you haven't heard in years.

I think we should do a yearly campaign that puts up graphic signs of mangled cars, death counts in the county from speeding, and the time difference between going the speed limit and 10 miles OVER the speed limit in how fast you will get to your destination.

Did anyone travel Rt. 15 between Frederick and Gettysburg in the 80's? It was (and I think still is) a deadly road and to detour people from speeding they took the cars that were involved in fatal accidents, painted them white and put them along the road for everyone to see. Used to be about 10 mangled cars you'd pass--very powerful. I've never forgotten that sight.

Does anyone know if they still have them up? Haven't been that way in years.

But people don't go 45, they go much faster!! Ever try crossing the street from Vestals Gap across Claiborne? Not fun during rush hour! What's the rush??? Slow down...with the price of gas, you'll use less by driving slower. Enjoy life...chill....everybody around here rushes all the time......take time to kick back and smell the roses once in a while. I used to have a heavy foot while driving, but no more - I get there when I get there and here's a novel idea....I always leave in plenty of time so I don't have to rush!! BTW - the townhomes across from Hillside school, the driveway does come out onto Claiborne.

Speeding itself is not the problem.

It is speeding AND driving stupidly!

It is not a driveway, it is an "access" road just like the rest of the roads that intersect with Claiborne, Waxpool, Truro Parrish and Broadlands.

I sure do remember RT 15 and the mangled cars. We're from WNY and drive RT 15 up to NY State and the road is actually better than it was back in the 80's. I still don't like RT 15 and sometimes we'll take RT 81 and then hop back on RT 15 outside of Harrisburg, PA.

Sorry to chime in late though this thread is hilarious. I hope when the "Children Playing in Road" signs get put up to remind drivers not to speed that a similar sign is put up right next to it that states "Adults Driving" to remind kids to look out for cars because they playing in the middle of the road.

Question: If there is even an off chance of someone speeding down a road why would anyone let their kids play in this area? Does a large sign really make you feel that it will be safe to let your kids play in the road?

i don't think MOST ppl are tallking about kids sitting in the street doing chalk drawings- we 're talking little hockey or stickball pick up games, riding bikes around a cul de sac, and worse case- small children darting into the road after a ball.

a few days ago at the corner of chickacoan and ellzey, a child UNDER 2 walked into the street after a ball. luckily we do NOT speed and saw it coming. there were NO adults outside, just a group of 7-9 yr olds playing soccer between the house and the road. 3 cars had to stop and wait while a child got the baby out of the road.

so we shouldn't speed 1) because we shouldn't SPEED, and 2) because anything can happen- with lack of supervision and unpredictability of kids and 3) because we should respect our neighborhood and drive likelour OWN kid could dart in front of the car!

I got to thinking about what T8erman said (every cul-de-sac will want a Children at Play sign) so some neighbors and I were talking about what would be more beneficial - a stop sign with a 'no outlet' sign on it.

Well, I'm very happy to report that after contacting VDOT and requesting a stop sign at the intersection of Highview Trail and Ridgeway at the opening of the cul-de-sac, VDOT ordered the stop sign yesterday afternoon and Van Metre has committed to putting it up no later than Friday or Monday.

Well done, Van Metre! We are very appreciative that VDOT and Van Metre were very receptive to our request.

Hmmm...do you have some inside dirt, incriminating pictures, etc. on Van Metre????
Any time the HOA has tried to get them to look at things, the response has always been "wait until the streets are turned over to VDOT and then you can deal with them."

Just being a proactive neighbor! Perhaps I should have waited until the sign was actually up, but then again, my contact at VDOT has been very helpful (even in the past) in getting things done.

While I agree that people should not speed your example illustrates the problem. If a two year old is running around in the road unsupervised it's a parent not being responsible. This type of thing happens too often in this area to a point that kids are desensitized to the fact that they ARE in the street. Respect for our neighborhood not only means not speeding though also means being respectful to drivers and not turning our roads into playgrounds.

If you are truly interested in the safety of your children common sense says that the best thing you can do for them is NOT have them play in or around roads (even in cul-de-sacs). No matter how many signs you put up let's face it, roads with cars driving on them are not safe play areas.

No they do not. Their street enters Claibourne - none of the homes back to or are adjacent to Claibourne itself.

The townhomes between broadlands blvd and vestals gap either face (across a street and across a buffer) or back to (across their yards and a buffer). None of them have their property adjacent or entering Claibourne.

You obviously don't have a "darter". Residential speed limits need to be respected and drivers need to be on their toes when in a residential area b/c there are children PRESENT. Which means hopefully a parent is around too. It ALSO means that kids do stupid things sometimes and parents might not anticipate it.
This is a silly argument. People just need to slow down (especially on Ridgeway Raceway!!)

I'm confused....the townhomes that are right across the street from Hillside...how do they get into their houses???? I see a drive way from Claiborne into the development and I'm assuming that's how they enter/leave when going anywhere, or is there another entrance?
