I was wondering if any of you out there are into the sport of pistol shooting? I'm looking for a shooting partner to hit the NRA range with every now and then and just talk guns.

I went to NRA range for first time this week. Whats the deal with the table they make you keep in your lane with you while you shoot. It took up almost half of the space in the lane.

    Lisa-
I don't believe you have to keep the table there, but it is there to keep your firearm when you are done firing it, to hold ammo boxes, extra magazines, targets, etc etc. This acts like the waist high tables you might find at other in-door ranges that are hinged and fold up to the side.

I actually prefer the NRA tables because you can move them out of the way if you want to.

I've seen others fire there and not have a table, though they were using a holster for their pistol. You may want to check with the NRA officials about the rules for moving the table.

I personally move it up and to the right as far as possible and stand to the left. Maybe you can move the table back -- but not behind the black line -- and then stand in front of it -- but behind the red line.

Otherwise, the facilities at the NRA are far superior to those at BlueRidge in Chantilly.

There is a proposal to build an in-door range in Ashburn, near the exit of Ashburn Village Blvd and Rt 7 in that business park.

In reference to the tables at the NRA Range, you can move them wherever you want. Alot of people keep ammo and such on them. The only thing you can't keep on them outside the "BOX" is firearms uncased. I tend to use a holster when not using my handgun and keep spare mags and ammo on the table and pull it behind me outside the shooting "box". If you keep a gun on the table it has to be cased and when you remove it from the case the table has to be in the "box".

Anyone else hear about this proposal? I'd like to read more about it if anyone knows where I can find the info.

I have not seen the actual proposal, but I heard about it from the NRA ( I get automatic emails from them about news and stuff), I've pasted the email below.

I also emailed the Chairman of our Board of Supervisors (Scott York) pledging my support and he wrote back saying he was in full approval of this project and will help anyway he can.

    NRA Email below:
    ==============================

Indoor Shooting Facility Proposal in Loudoun County
Please Contact Your Board Members Today!
On Monday, June 9, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors will likely consider a proposal to allow for construction of a new indoor shooting facility to be located in Ashburn. The Beaumeade Gun Club is requesting that a special exception be approved to allow the indoor firearm facility. The location of the proposed shooting facility appears to be ideally suited for such an operation which is a much-needed resource for the area’s law-abiding firearm owners.

It is widely recognized that increased development in Loudoun County has greatly diminished opportunities for law-abiding firearm owners to develop and improve their firearms proficiency.

Please contact both your Supervisor, and Board Chairman Scott York, and strongly encourage them to grant Beaumeade Gun Club’s special use exemption and allow for this important project to move forward! You can contact the Board Members at (703) 777-0204 or by email which is listed below.

Please also make plans to attend the meeting on Monday, June 9 at 6:00 p.m. in the County Government Building, 1 Harrison Street, Leesburg, Va 20177.

I would support a shooting range in Loudoun. I'm a recreational shooter myself. In reviewing the application, I have become concerned that the applicant does not intend to operate a facility that will be open to members of the local community. It appears instead to be a highly specialized center for security personnel, such as executive-protection experts and others in that community, to use. I have spoken with NRA's legislative arm and have asked them to look into this, reporting back what they can find out, and what the applicant has already told them. If this facility will not be open at a reasonable price to Loudoun's residents, I will want to know much more about it before I can commit to a position on it.

    Steve-
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and information with us.

Bummer to hear that it might be a specialized private type of facility. Though I do believe our officers and security personnel need access to such facilities, it would be a 'tease' to have something like this in my backyard and yet be unable to use it for recreational, sport or personal benefit.

The other item I hope it is not going to be is a pure 'club' where membership is required, especially if it is costly. There is already a gun/shooting club in Fairfax and you have to be sponsored to even be considered a member (I don't know about prices). I think it is important to have these types of clubs, but I also believe responsible gun owners need cost-effective, safe and accessible range to practice. Not to mention I think it helps educate other residents of the proper handling plus the fun that is involved in the sport.

Steve, can you keep us posted as to your findings?

    thanks
    Chris

Unfortunately I won't be able to make the meeting tonight. I have some other things to attend to that won't allow me to attend. If this "Range" is not going to be open to the public I am highly disappointed in that. There is a lack of indoor ranges in Loudoun county to begin with and if this is really for only the "priviledged" I would probably not be in that group. Blue Ridge Arsenal allows Fairfax County to use their range and they still are open to the public, so why should it be any different here. I am a Concealed Permit Holder and I need to practice just as much as the cops do. I need to practice because, I don't carry a cop.

    Gun Ohna-
I believe this range will not be open to the public. It is a private club that is for corporate members and costs a boatload of money to join.
    But I could be wrong.

Well we got rid of a .45 and the sig sauer that i so proficiently hit a bulls eye with the very first time I used it! Got way to nervous with the little ones around back then. Kaos can also shoot clays if anyone is ever interested in that...though he doesn't get out much...I feel with his job, he could use some blasting away time very efficiently!

Gads! With all of the empty land out here I cannot imagine a good business wo/man could not make an indoor shooting range & out door clay ranges work!

I've got a 16 guage over and under hand made for my pop in Spain. Out at the BUll Run Trap Range I was offered a ton of cash for it. Right - it's got my Pop's NAME in it - and it slaughters trap clays. Skeet -not so much - choke's too tight.

    Anyone hit the lottery recently?

Thanks for the info. When I asked them if I could move it to the back out of the way they said I had to keep it in the lane. Next time I will just move it and see what they say. Definitely liked this range over Blue Ridge and will try it again.

I'm very interested to hear about what this 'gun club' really is (i.e. private club for security or police only or open to the public)... because I have my NRA Range Source book sitting here by my computer. Ironically enough it came in one week prior to hearing about this proposal.

If the Beaumeade club is private, then my pipe-dream of opening an indoor range in the area is still alive.

    We shall see

And a great dream it is. I'd be happy to work for you doing NRA Training once you get it going.
