Ok, cause I'm a on-line catalog junkie, I pretty much order all stuff I need/want online.. Cloths, stuff for the casa, pet meds, etc... SO, last Friday I was waiting for a package, and usually UPS leaves it on the steps, no problem. All of a sudden, I get a note on the door, that said it required a person to receive my order (which BTW is less than $25.00 in value). So I signed the note, left it taped to the door this morning, and be-bopped off to work. came home today and guess what, another note, taped to the one I left. Noted had been left by UPS, said, plainly, someone needs to be home to receive all packages. So, hmmm, I called UPS and asked what gives?? They said the driver has the discretion to leave or not leave packages in questionable neighborhoods and the driver did not feel that leaving my package on my door was a good idea, since there has been a high rate of package theft in our neighborhood? I just got a delivery last Tuesday from the UPS guy, and he left it on my door. I asked to have them just leave it, and they said NO. Someone had to be there, no exceptions. Has anyone had issues with this, or is my street just a real problem for UPS. Apparently it is, cause they don't want to leave stuff.

I know, I could go over to Chantilly to pick up the merchandise, but I paid to have it delivered to my address, not theirs.

    thanks for any input.

I almost always have our large packages dropped on our steps. No theft issues. However, DHL once "hurled" a package up the front steps (we're in a townhouse)! My report back to the company (Lego) on this issue resulted in finding out that they were getting many similar complaints. Lego was considering dropping DHL. My husband's company (a major software company) did drop DHL, however, because of their shoddy practices. Perhaps you could call the folks with whom you are doing business and let them know. I do not believe I have heard of any mail theft issues in the Broadlands South.

Sorry to hear that you are getting the run around, though. Good luck!

we haven't had any issues with ups. though one time we went out of town and our flight got in many, many hours later than it should have. a huge Dell box was sitting on our doorstep at 1 a.m. in the rain. i couldn't believe they just left that!

dhl is another story...they are HORRIBLE. they throw things in the bushes, by the garage, etc. the one that delivers to us is barely clothed. i can't believe that DHL lets their folks even dress like that?

Also if you don't have a covered porch or it is wet in the porch they won't leave it because of weather.

not a problem, we have a covered porch, with an area to put stuff out of sight. Apparently they have had a rash of stolen merchandise from my address. Funny thing is that no one at UPS can give me dates, times, or complaints. I have not reported nor my wife, so we want to know who the deliveries where for and when they were supposedly stolen. I will wait until tomorrow to speak with the distribution manager to get to the bottom of this.

Very odd, especially considering they once left a package on my mom's front step...in Brooklyn, NY!

That package, needless to say, was pillaged.

i actually would like to know where, who to call to complain about DHL. i just happened to be walking by my door last week and see him drop a letter on our porch, no courteousy knock or bell ring or anything, and by the way, it was about to storm. so strike one. and second thing one, the kid had on a guinea T / wife beater, and was sweaty and greasy and on his cell phone. no way, if they knew, they would allow their people to dress like that. at least UPS is professional.

    Good luck with DHL...

I once did some beta-testing work for a very large software manufacturer. They would send me updates every week via DHL. I kid you not; I lived in a townhouse in Annandale and the DHL driver would literally drive by the house and HURL the package out the window to my front steps, a distance of about 30-35 feet. On multiple occaisions I arrived home to find the package with lots of damage to the box, not to mention multiple times where it just sat in the rain for 6 hours until I got home from work. Calling DHL at the time was fruitless; they would claim to 'look into the situation', and it would just keep happening. The large software manufacturer got so many complaints that they were literraly forced to switch to UPS. From that day on, packages were always gently delivered to my front door, and if there was ANY indication of bad weather, always wrapped in a plastic bag to protect it.

We get UPS deliveries at our house pretty often, and I've noticed that it's usually the same driver. He's always courtious, and in the rare occaisons I've had to sign for something, he's always polite and jovial. So given a choice, we always go with UPS.

Chsalas, I'd be curious to hear what you find out from the manager regarding your 'address'. I wonder if they had complaints for your street, and not your particular home?

Or maybe the driver just likes you

So I'm guessing that DHL stands for Drunken, Hairy Louts?

Well, to the Managers shock, when I showed up at the UPS Dulles/Chantilly office, where she worked, she told me that there has been several packages reported stolen from my residence. I asked her to give me the tracking numbers and names of the recipients. She ran the report, and it seems that there was no justification. I have not had any reports of stolen packages, and she could only find one or two for our street in the last 3 years. I asked her what was the justification and her response was that it comes automatically from the corporate office, and she removed my address from the list of houses that require someone in person to be there. I don't know about the rest of the street, but I suspect that if you are not getting any UPS drop offs, then you better call or visit Toni at the Chantilly UPS office. Technically you can't call her cause, and I quote" they are not set up to take phone calls at the distribution center". Apparently phone don't exists at thees large buildings, so the only way to communicate with them is to try to get CS to send them a electronic message or drive over there and ask for the manager of your area. I think she was quite shocked when I showed up. But now I know what the problem is.

This happened to me when I lived in Alexandria. The local UPS office said they wouldn't leave packages with a signature in person. They told me there were too many thefts on my street. I called the City of Alexandria police to ask about it, and they said they had no reports of any packages stolen. The sergeant I talked to asked me to have the UPS supervisor call him and make a report so that they could investigate the thefts.

I called the UPS office again, and when I told them that the police had no record of any thefts, there was a prolonged silence on the other end of the phone. I gave the woman the name and phone number of the sergeant, and repeated his request that she contact him.

I never had another problem getting deliveries with just a signature.

Maybe it's a way for UPS to get residents to utilize the UPS Store's "virtual doorman" service.

    ***Rant on***

I have had the same problems with UPS - AT MY OFFICE!!! Grrrr. I need to be able to order office supplies from Staples or whoever, and have them left at the (interior) door in our office building. I make that request clear on the order, and I expect to see the box waiting for me next time I come in. Several times now UPS has held my box hostage while we back-and-forth with notes on the door. I let Staples know that UPS was interfering with their promised next-day delivery and that I would be taking my business to another company that could honor its own delivery policy. I let UPS know that I would encourage Staples, Office Max, and the other companies we use frequently, NOT to use them if they would not follow customer instructions. UPS told me at every level, that they could not, would not, shall not leave the package for me. Guess what? Next morning there it was outside the door when I arrived. Nice of them to make an exception to their "no-exceptions" policy, but what a hassle - and two days after I needed the stuff.

***Now back to my regular mellow attitude***

    HMMMMM

I wonder if this is not some tactic to save $$$ due to gas costs. MAYBE they do not even drive out to specific area and just have the package recipient come to the distribution center? hmmmmm, hmmmmmmm

Maybe they are becoming a bad neighbor deliverer. ;)

They're leaving a notice on the door though, so they ARE coming to the house...

That's exactly the kind of brilliant thinking I'd expect from them at this point, saving gas money by driving out to your place with a note instead of those pesky boxes....

Doubt it; they already impose a fuel surcharge on the folks shipping stuff.

    http://www.ups.com/content/us/en/resources/find/cost/fuel_surcharge.html

And the last thing UPS wants is to have boxes sitting around. They're in the business of moving things from one place to another, not storage. Anything that sits in a distribution center instead of moving costs them money.
