Did anyone else see this tonight at the field of Mill Run? It was taking off about 7:30 and there were 2 other emergency vehicles there in the back of the school. I did not see much before but since the helicopter flew right over my house it was hard to miss. I hope all are ok?

I saw a lot of Police/Fire vehicles at Ridgeway and Stone Hollow prior to the helicopter arriving. Before I could walk back up there - they were gone.

A couple of kids were skateboarding down the hill on Ridgeway towards Stone Hollow. One lost control, fell off and hit his head on the curb. He was not wearing a helmet and was knocked unconscious from the impact. They ended up boarding him up and sending him on the chopper from the school. I don't know where things stand but wish him the best and hope he only ended up with a knot on his head...

I just got an email from the prayer group at my Church that says he's in critical condition.

That's awful! I hope he'll be ok. Do we know the ages of these two boys?

I'll keep him in my prayers.

Ugh, I'm so sorry to hear this. These are the kids we work with so much--it could have been any one of them. Do you know the boys' first name? We'll spread this to friends to pray for him and his family. Please keep up updated if you hear anything.

My heart goes out. I hope he recovers.

I have seen them racing down the hill recently. I tried to say something to him but he went by so fast he did not hear me or just ignored. They ride up the hill in a car (maybe with an older friend) and then race down the hill (without regard to cars coming from Stone Hollow). When my wife and I saw them, we could not believe they were risking their lives without helmets. They had to be going at least 30mph. The skateboards looked like a longer type made for speed (not like the oval ones that we used in the 80's). I just wish they would have listened to adults who have been around the block and know that we are not invinvible.

    I'm pulling for him.

The boys name was Josh Moore, according to the prayer chain from my church. As of 6:30 tonight he was in critical condition, as stated above. Please keep him and his family in your prayers.

oh no... we will also keep him in our prayers. i hope EVERY parent on here shows this thread to their kids so they understand the importance of safety gear and responsible riding- whatever their wheels of choice may be. to quote my little guy- "even Tony Hawk wears a helmet mom, and he's GREAT at this!"

sending waves of good vibes to this boy, his family and friends.

Is there any word on the boy who was hurt? I've been thinking about him.

Unfortunately, I saw another boy skateboarding down Truro Parish today, right at a curve where no car would stand a chance of stopping before seeing him. And he wasn't wearing a helmet. It's a shame that these kids think that nothing will happen to them.

I think I saw the same boy today around 9:50A. He was zig zagging down Truro Parish in bare feet and with no helmet. The way cars speed down that hill, he could have been toast!

We've got them on Glebe View just about daily. Sometimes they even go down the wrong side of the road or the middle of the road in the dark. One of the younger ones bailed out the other day in my neighbor's front yard and just laid there moaning for a little while and then got back up and continued on (as his friend rode by on a skateboard screaming "OhmyGod, OhmyGod, OhmyGod" as he picked up speed going down the hill...he was scared silly and couldn't stop). The police want you to call them if there is a chase car following behind. They will come out and tell them to stop. We have seen the chase car just about hit their longboarding friends many times.

We are so afraid one of these kids is going to be killed (and that one of our kids is going to witness it).

i am sooo glad my kid watched Scarred on MTV. he is so careful and not at ALL interest in seeing how far he can push it until he breaks a bone. no- he saves THAT adrenaline rush for seeing how far he can push US with his smart mouth! which at times could be MORE dangerous to his health than longboarding down a hill with no helmet.. :( kidding.

i hope this kid is ok- i have seen nothing in the news about it.

What's a chase car? Do they have a friend follow behind them in a car so that some random car doesn't take them down?

What also gets me is the kids that do wear the helmets, but don't buckle them...like it's cool to leave the straps swinging. I don't get it.

I hope this kid recovers and is enough of an influence to get other kids to using their heads and wearing buckled helmets.

A chase car is the car full of friends that follows closely behind the longboarder, not to keep him safe, but to transport him back up to the top of the hill so he can do it all over again. We only know this because we watch them do it again and again and again.

There really isn't anywhere for them to ride. Sidewalks are off limits so that is why the street is used. Once upon a time a YMCA was planned for the Broadlands and that went away, so what happened to that land. There are enough resources in Ashburn to build and skatepark/BMX park in the area if the land was available. As many children that live in the Broadlands alone I am sure that it would have community support. These kids need something to do and a place to do it. Any suggestions?

That land is owned by the county. It is the location of the "Broadlands Recreation Center" that got voted down for funding.
At some point when the county has funding they are suppose to build some kind of County run rec center on it. So the property is still there but you need to get the county to spend the money and thus the whole county to approve it
