I'll have to look at the library to see what I can find about different approaches to learning and how I can help my child in addition to what the public schools teach. I think that's a good compromise for our family.

I encourage all so inclined parents to homeschool, or private school their kids. It sounds like a win, win. Those doing so have their justification and seem to be happy with the results for their kids.

On the other hand we all see lower costs for public education when folks choose an alternative to public education. Less children to pay for in the system.

I am very satisfied with the excellent education my kids received and are receiving from Loudoun County Schools.

My daughter is a junior in college now, and she is thriving. I think the foundation established from a Loudoun County public school education is a big part of it. Specifically, she has said that her H.S. training and preparation in English has been a big boost for her. She has noticed the difference when comparing her base H.S. training to her current college peers.

We seriously considered Loudoun County schools for our family. As part of that process, we spoke with teachers, adminsitrators, and local parents. It seems that many people are satisfied with the schools, but we decided that homeschooling was better. We have been very happy, and our kids love it. Of course, some of the recent news out of the Loudoun County school system serves as good reinforcement of our decision - see http://www.myfoxdc.com/myfox/pages/ContentDetail?contentId=7259464

We also recently enrolled one of our kids at Sidwell Friends. It provides an absolutely awesome learning environment, and I can definitely recommend it.

We have trained teachers, students and parents in over 600 schools in almost every state, which gives us helpful perspective on the quality of our schools. We'll be happy to discuss our experience with local schools privately with individuals who are concerned or whose children need help.

We will also be providing workshops for parents and teachers at Hillside later this fall (TBD). And don't forget to come out to Tolbert Elementary Wednesday evening to get your kids (and yourself!) ready for a successful school year.

children all learn differently, so i feel that it's not that one type of schooling is OVERALL better another- private, home or public, but rather, what works best for YOUR child's learning style. my son and i wouldn't last 1 WEEK in homeschooling- we are too much alike. he thrived in private school and now thrives in public. the one constant is that we stayed involved and ON TOP of his cirriculum. we do additional worksheets from the internet for any subjects he struggles in. i know his learning style so i can help him process things that sometimes he doesn't "get" during class.

teachers here do an outstanding job with the difficult task they have in teaching so many diffefrent kids with different home lives, cultures, styles, etc. THEY lay the foundation of education, WE as parents have to make the difference in whether our kids get by or thrive.

    afgm,

Do you equate under-age drinking with sexual exploitation of minors? You didn't really say anything about the recent bad press about the sexual exploitation issue. Instead, you just tried to shift the focus...

That makes me wonder about a potential question. Are you affiliated with Loudoun County Public Schools? You seem only to note the positive things about the school system, not the negative. So the community of users here can understand your possible biases, could you please disclose them?

I openly disclose that the children in my family are home-schooled or attend private school. I pay taxes in Loudoun Schools, so I do monitor what goes on there to see if my tax dollars are being used in the best interest of kids. That's it for my disclosures...

Huh? Where's the bubble? Kids in our family play sports, go out in the neighborhood, shop, etc. all the time. Weird biases against home-schooling families are so common. People seem to think that they are kept locked up in a basement (or a bubble?!?).

Instead of saying that it does not happen just in Loudoun County Public Schools, why not focus on making sure it does not happen again?

Then you expose your kids to all areas that could involve child abuse. This was not a comment about home-schooling, just a reaction to your comment that a child abuse allegation was a good reason to keep kids out of school. If you think abuse is a good reason to stay away from public schools, you should consider staying away from all other areas where abuse happens.

And yes, I have done things to try and keep this from happening to students in the future. I worked for many years in a Child Abuse Prevention Agency, teaching children how to stay safe.

    cindyb,

I was responding to bigdog who has asked for views from others in the community about the schools here. I shared my views. You don't agree with them, and that does not bother me at all. We don't coddle the kids in our family, and we teach them to respect kids who come from all types of families (even those who are not home-schooled). In our family, we have made different decisions.

Oh come on, of course I don't equate the two. But I must say, innocent until proven guilty. This case seems to have a lot more to it than is being reported.

As for 33 Sidwell Friends students being arrested for underage drinking...well sorta makes you wonder what type of classes they are teaching over there.

As far as my affiliation with LCPC, I have three interests, two of them have graduated and one is still in LCPS school. That's a lot of insight. Much more than I can say for someone like you that seems to want to pass judgement from heresay, as opposed to actual experience.

BTW, thanks for your contribution to the LCPC tax base, and also for your efforts to control costs.

Kids of all educational systems get into trouble - it's just what they do. Not all kids get into trouble but offer up a sampling of 100 kids of various schoolings and backgrounds and a percentage of them will get into trouble, some more seriously than others. That's just how kids are.

I think the common ground all of us can agree on here is that parental involvement in a child's education is key. Without the support, participation, and encouragement of parents, few children will do well in any environment.

back on topic, different strokes. our schools aren't perfect, none are. but they ARE good.

What is your source for this allegation? My discussion of this point was based on the school system's statements and the press stories. Where do you get that this information is not the whole picture?

So, any family making a different decision from the one you made is doing something wrong? That's a nice world-view you have (saracasm).

I most likely read the things you read about the allegation, including most of the media write ups. My judgement is there is more to the story, than what the CA is releasing. Regardless he's innocent until proven guilty. I am surprised you jump so easily to the guilty part.

Any family or individual is entitled to their own opinion. No one has a monopoly on righteousness. At least I don't think so. (sarcasm). Fact is you have no direct parental/student involvement in public schools, so your opinion is based on hearsay. You can have any opinion you want but it won't change the fact you have a lack of perspective folks with kids in the public schools have.

Just as I can only speculate what is involved in a homeschooling environment. I don't have the hands on perspective others do. You seem to want to have it both ways.

Do you always make such strange assumptions??? That statement simply is not true. I have heard directly from many former students of Loudoun County system talk in depth about issues that they have confronted. There are two now home-schooled students that our family knows quite well who were at the top of their class in the school system but asked their parents to pull them out because the school system teaches to the so-called average student and they wanted a challenging environment.

To the poster asking for thoughts from the community: I've provided my feedback. Take it for what it is worth. I'm bowing out of this thread because it seems that afgm will not allow anyone to make a remark that he deems to be a criticism of his school system (see his remarks above about the school system's sexual exploitation case).

Just like I said, you just defined hearsay. Doesn't make it right or wrong, it's just "hearsay".

    Dictionary: hearsay

    (hîr'sā') [IMG]

    n.
    1. Unverified information heard or received from another; rumor.
    2. Law. Evidence based on the reports of others rather than the personal knowledge of a witness and therefore generally not admissible as testimony.
My statement stands. You'll never have the perspective of a family with kids in LCPS. Just like I'll never have the perspective of someone who home schools.

Furthermore, your finger pointing towards a charge brought on someone that has not gone to trial, would be just as germain as if I said, that all Sidwell Friends students are trained drunks, "see above article on 33 arrested examples".

Although I would say SF surely taught Al Gore how to invent the internet. I guess that means all SF students and alums are trained drunks and liars. (sarcasm)
